Does anyone else feel this way? Apathy
I am trying to stay energized about the basketball program because I have been a true blue Tiger fan for 40 years.

I just look at this team and our staff and I feel 100% uninterested. Even in so many down years in basketball I have never felt the way I do now.

I can't put my finger on this feeling but I think it may be apathy. If I am apathetic I am very nervous about the rest of the fan base as well.

what feelings are you feeling?

Apathy
Excitement
Hope
Despair
????

RE: Does anyone else feel this way? Apathy
I don't think it's apathy since you cared enough to post. And I'm sure you will most likely watch the Tiger games. It's more about not having much expectations from this team. This is basically a rebuilding year and if Coach Pastner is able to take this team to the NCAA, then it would at least IMO would show that he's developing into a top-tier coach as well.

We have the Lawsons coming in next year, so that will be a real test. That team needs to do well and get a good seed going into the NCAA tournament.

Another problem is we as fans (at least many of us) don't really have a sense of what the Tiger teams' style of play is under Coach Pastner. Also, lack of offensive and defensive identities at this point is a bit disconcerting. Maybe this is the year though where he figures it out?

As for the watching/following the Tigers, we are Tiger fans. We have been through worse and I doubt our fanhood diminished during those times. I'll always watch and follow Tiger football and basketball irrespective of how good/mediocre a team maybe. The fact that these kids are playing for the Tigers is good enough for me to watch the games, and hope that the team improves as the season goes on. As for expectations, I frankly would be ok with the team making the NIT and be pleasantly surprised if they make it to the NCAA tournament. It's a long season, and anything can happen.

If I can suffer through the football we played for the last few years and not be apathetic, and continue to cheer for the team, I don't think I'll have a problem with basketball. I would love for us to be great every year, but that's not realistic. I'll just enjoy the wins and try to shake off the losses quickly. I'll let Bowen and the boosters decide about Josh. Just a waste of good brain cells to agonize about whether he stays or goes. Not my decision. Coaches come and go. I always stay.

I think every fan has seasons of decreased interest. Take a few weeks off and then see.

I usually go back and watch some old Tiger games and remember why I'm a Tiger fan. Never have been anything else in the college ranks. Maybe some good wins can rekindle that spark in at least some of us. When I watch Austin and Nick King play I feel like I'm watching some of the old Tigers. I'm excited about Hawkins if no one else is. I think he's going to be fun to watch before this year is out.

I agree with all posters in this thread. We are a flawed team this year. I for one will wait to see if the team developes or if they fracture. Dealing with kids here. On a positive note I did like what I saw of Hawkins and Woodson. Pookie needs more experience but could turn out well. We'll see.

I agree about football, have sat through some really tough years with absolutely no hope, so yes I will still keep going and cheering on the kids who signed up to play here. As long as they are busting their ass and don't thorw in the towel, we can cheer them on. I have completely lost what little faith I ever had in this staff and would love to move on but like mentioned before I am not rich enough to influence anything and I do have faith in Bowen. He cannot be happy with the direction, nor can the people coming up with the 2.8M, hopefully they won't let it go on too long. I do feel our crowds will dwindle through the year, just the way Memphis is.

Have to agree with everyone else on this thread. I may not go out of my way to find a stream for a non-TV game, but I'll still be following.

Starting this thread shows no apathy from the OP.

There is misplaced and odd anger...and there will be more empty seats than normal come Monday...and there is more of an entitlement and impatience than apathy. The likely tepid crowd will then assail the players for not playing like it is a
Final Four.

This is good advice. I took about 65 weeks off and, while I'm not thrilled with the direction of the basketball program, it also isn't keeping me up at night.

RE: Does anyone else feel this way? Apathy
I have not excitement, but not apathy...I'll say a rooting interest. I love basketball at all levels and have coached one competitive travel team. It's an interesting game and interesting situation Memphis is in. I'll watch the games to see the development.

So far, I see a fairly simple high pick and roll offense. The concerns to me are some on the team would rather force their own shot than dump it into the post to Nichols who's obviously the best talent on the team with King second and Shaq a close third so far.

I know it goes against his "the open man is the go-to man" philosophy, but I think JP will have to move to a "GET THE BALL TO ONE OF THESE 3 PLAYERS!" or "Austin touches the ball EVERY posession!"

RE: Does anyone else feel this way? Apathy
Last week I posted a similiar thread related to season ticket demand.

I am not sure of the correct word to describe what I and others are feeling. Perhaps it is hopelessness, apathy, or frustration. I am still passionate about U of M athletics and I couldn't be more excited about the football program(I will be there with my family on Saturday).

But basketball??? I have lost interest in watching JP's team play. For 6 straight years I DVRed or Streamed every game I could find. The past two years, I have watched maybe 15 games. Only been to the forum once since 2012. I didn't even check the score on Tuesday, I suspected it would be the same A$$ whipping we take at the beggining of every season.

Every season under JP starts the same. This year is slightly differenct b/c we didn't have the expectations, but we still stink. Team looks undisciplined, no system, someone is suspended, etc..

In terms of recruiting, that no longer excites me either. It is funny how all the top recruits JP has coached just don't seem to work out. They were over-rated, selfish, bad attitude, blah blah blah. How can so many people ignore these trends?

Sorry for my rant. I love Tiger Basketball, but unless JP does a complete 180 with his coaching style, I just don't care to watch any longer.[/u]

I still have a "hangover" from UConn kicking our arse the end of last year. I won't go out of my way to watch "clueless' basketball.

I asked my wife to give away our tickets to monday's game (she has lots of business contacts that MIGHT go).
I'll make it back to FEF once football season is over but not on a work night unless things improve dramatically.

If it's not apthy then i guess it's depression?

Sometimes you have to work at it a little. Can't be "mountain top" every single season.
