No, Rice just lost a set of long term rivals (Houston and SMU), a school that it had associated with since the 90s (Tulsa), and an academic peer (Tulane).
Well, some of us still look down on Tulane...

I think you should be able to get to M'boro in 5.5 hours........ if you don't pee too many times (or carry a "big gulp" cup to relieve yourself in )

If ODU does drop football and they are replaced, consider Louisiana.
Easy driving for Rice to San Antonio, Lafayette and Hattiesburg along I 10 and northward to Denton and Ruston. Only have to fly to UTEP within division. Much better attendance at games not to mention strengthening the conference not only in football and basketball but in baseball (#1 last year) and softball (perennial Top 10 & 6 WCWS).
West Division
Rice, Louisiana, USM, UTSA, UTEP, N. Texas, LA Tech
East Division
Marshall, ODU, Charlotte, WKU, MT, FIU, FAU

I am not wishing UAB's demise. Hope you get to keep football. Only IF things don't work out for you. Hope for the best and plan for the worse.

What don't you get? Rice lost all long term associations with our former conference mates and no longer has any academic peers in the new conference. Rice is on an island in the new conference, academically and what it considers peer institutions.

Other than Tulane, there were no other academic powerhouses in the CUSA before, or AAC now. Unless Rice joins the Big 10 or the Ivy league, or maybe the ACC, they'll be on an island anywhere academically. Thats a compliment by the way.

So you deem Houston a peer rival?? Sounds like Rice fans deem themselves better than everybody else. I would say Tulane and maybe SMU were peer institutions maybe. Rice can be the Vanderbilt of CUSA if that make their fans feel any better but to state you are on an Island when you are in fact dead in the middle of the footprint is a misrepresentation. Tech was 800 miles from its nearest conference mate. We were conference mates for 5 years in the WAC and going on 2 in CUSA. You have been in the WAC and CUSA with UTEP as well.

The next time we have any kind of movement the best option is to not take on any more schools. Twelve schools would be ideal.

What I took from the original comment, was that when a bunch of the WAC left, LT was very isolated geographically. Then the rice fan said they were in the same predicament, which I confused to be geographic. I didn't think it as a cultural isolation.
