I still have my fingers crossed that we can make it into the Independence Bowl, but I would still be very happy if it was the Birmingham Bowl.
who am I kidding...........after the Larry Porter years, I'm happy just to see the Tigers going to a bowl game again and we still have 3 games left to play and the front runners for a conference title for the first time in my 40 year life!!!!!!!

It's worth absolutely nothing because we each still have 3 games to play, and our next one is a road game against a team that just beat the team (on the road) that beat us (at home).

Houston had one lost fumble and three intercepted passes. If we keep control of the ball, we win.

I hate to say it, but we became turnover queens at the end of last season. Let's hope we don't have a replay.

This source says $1.4M+, and no, we would not get as big a payout. If backups are used, they get some lesser amount.
http://www.collegefootballpoll.com/bowl_...edule.html
TripleA, what's your take on going to the Cactus Bowl... the payout is HUGE at $3M plus! Our program could certainly use some of the P5 big money.
The AAC has no deal with the Cactus Bowl. I don't see a path there, unless we just swap with somebody, or that bowl's contracts and backups don't work out. And even if we went there, the payout would be lessened to a backup or fill-in, high team expenses would also cut into it, and it would be hard for our fan base to travel there.
Just doesn't seem quite as good as it looks on the surface.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I'm thinking I might just bank on the Birmingham bowl since that seems like a > 50% chance, and if we end up going to another... so be it.

Me too...Jan 3, Sat at noon is perfect.
My work hates requests off during the holidays, so Jan 3 is fine.
Sat at noon is perfect for folks driving in the morning, and driving home after.
It's just works out...I want that bowl so bad.
Me, too. I have two kids coming in from opposite coasts for a week at Christmas, and baby twins with a Christmas Eve birthday here. To say my schedule is packed is an understatement.

So far, considering travel expenses, the B'Ham bowl makes the most monetary sense. Team buses are cheaper than plane tickets, correct me if I'm wrong....

Not even a close comparison in price. Not to mention the fan base we'd bring to B'Ham would be double of what we'd bring anywhere else.

I want the nation to see us playing a "Privileged 5" school before a packed house. Birmingham fills the bill, especially if the opponent is an SEC or ACC team which is reasonably close. If we cannot travel at least 16,000 enthusiastic Tiger fans to that bowl we should be ashamed.

I'd venture to say we'd take 20,000+ to Birmingham...

Well, 20,000 is a stretch. I would think that we might match the Tiger crowd at the 1st New Orleans Bowl, but that Tiger crowd was nowhere near 20,000 IMHO. Anybody have a feel for how many we had there? Google shows 25,000 total attendance for that 2003 New Orleans Bowl. I was there and I would bet that we had at least 10,000 and maybe 15,000 but not 20,000.
If we were at 27,000 for a home game at Halloween, then to expect 20,000 to travel to any bowl over the holidays is very optimistic.

RE: Bowl Travel Planning
all of the bowls will have approx the same "profit" for us , ZERO. If we cover expenses and have a good time it will be a success.
Bowl revenues are shared with the conference and the actual payout is in tickets, not cash ... the tickets are expensive tickets that fans on this board like to complain about ...

I have seen on a few different sites that Memphis could fill a spot in the Cactus Bowl. I would hate that location, BUT the payout is $3.3 million and would be fun for the players and the game is on Jan 2nd. Plus, we would get to play a power 5 school. This would be a long shot for the Tigers to get the invite.
The Director of the Liberty Bowl was on the radio the other day and he said if Memphis wins out, there might even be an option to get the Tigers here. It also sounded like he was pimping out the Liberty Bowl to do what ever it takes to get the VOLS to come to Memphis for the game. It's been a LONGGGGGG time since we went to a bowl, so I'm ready to go see the Tigers play in an out of town bowl game. However, it sure would be cool to see the Liberty Bowl packed with Memphis fans for the bowl game we have always wanted to go to.
Memphis vs Texas in the Liberty Bowl?
