MyBB Shocking: BB team needed weight training
http://www.commercialappeal.com/sports/t...m_50683835

..."I stressed to him regardless if he chose myself or (another) strength and conditioning coach, with this group of guys you have coming back and the way you’re trying to take this program to the next level, you need a sound, fundamental strength-based program — nuts and bolts strength and conditioning. Barbells. Dumbbells,” Akujobi said.

“Some things you can’t reinvent the wheel on. Strength and conditioning has a lot of new sexy phrases, but at the end of the day we need to lift weights. We have to gain muscle mass. We have to get strong.”

Memphis hadn’t lifted free weights in the 2½ seasons that Frank Matrisciano was the strength and conditioning coach...

In sum, our new strength coach - Evarist Akujobi - believes conventional weight training, nutrition, and conditioning techniques yields the best results. The article also cites his conscientious conduct while discharging his duties.

It may be nice to mix in a little something different every now and then but nothing can replace good ole iron for building strength and mass.

Just somebody who gets the kids to work out. Whether he wants them to do 400 lb barbell squats or 900 body weight burpees, just get the kids to work out. That's why Frank isn't here anymore. Akujobi sounds great and he seems to be someone the kids gravitate to. That's awesome, because they'll want to be in the gym with him.

The point appears self evident. Memphis' S&C guy (not me...just linking the article) says the players needed weight training and we're "punked" on occasion last year.

Don't like it? Take it up with him or Jason Smith.

No surprise that Pastner's team has looked like boys against men on many occasions.

So they need more weight training..............and? What am I missing? Is this one of those Saluki threads of 'I was right all along' about Frank or Josh or somebody else? Get over it

I wonder what Frank's biggest fan, transitt, thought about this article, especially the mention of "bench press".

Well, last year's team did get stomped at times, especially in some of the bigger games. I'm not sure whether it was because we were physically not strong enough, or mentally not strong enough. Anyway, let's evaluate this new approach as the season progresses. It can't hurt.

I don't think it was a particular weakness due to training last year. We had a small backcourt. Geron was a pretty strong guy though. Chris and JJ were not physical players by nature. Geron and Dixon were.

Austin was pushed around a bit but that's not uncommon for a freshman forward. We'll have to wait and see if he's put in the time and gotten stronger this year. Ditto for King. Shaq is a pretty strong guy down there.

We've got a nice collection of older guys coming in this year too who should add some bulk and strength at a few different positions, so I suspect we will already be a more physical team this year.

I'm glad we are going to focus more on it in the future though. I'm a big believer in weight training. Particularly so on intense weight training in the off season.

I like our new S&C coach and he appears to be a good hire.

Frank's employment was riskier because he is an innovator. It is easier to stick with conventional methods for an employer because it leads to less criticism if something goes wrong. However, without innovation significant improvement is not possible. For example, I remember when weight training was considered counter productive for basketball players. Someone took the risk to go against conventional wisdom and now what was once radical has reached canonical status.

Frank's employment was risky because he apparently didn't think it was his job to see that the kids actually worked out.

Frank was a nut case. Glad he's gone and we got someone who isn't trying to "reinvent the wheel" as was stated in the article. And yes Saluki was RIGHT as were the rest of us that thought the whole "life changer" thing was foolish.
