Classic SMU-UConn Highlight
1989, SMU hadn't fielded a team since the 1986 season and we returned to the gridiron with a team of mostly freshmen. We lost the first game back to SWC rival Rice. The second game was an OOC game with UConn. In the final minute, SMU pushed down the field to score and win "the miracle on mockingbird." Here's a clip of the final drive, figured it was timely since we are now conference mates.

RE: Classic SMU-UConn Highlight
I was there, wearing a UConn t-shirt and an SMU cap.

UConn was (of course) 1-AA. They wouldn't move to 1-A until about 2002. That was UConn's first trip west of the Mississippi. It may have been their first trip west of Pittsburgh.

I honestly think SMU received some homer ref calls late in the game.

Even though SMU was guilty as sin, I always still felt bad for their fans and students. It's too bad that death penalty thing had to happen.

On another note, I thought SMU used to play their games at the old Texas Stadium. Did they lose that too because of the 2 year absence?

In an effort to save football after the Death Penalty, it was brought "back to campus" to Ownby Stadium, which was built in the 20's. It only held 20-25k, so SMU moved to the Cotton Bowl full time in the 40's (upper decks were added to the Cotton Bowl because of the large SMU/Doak Walker crowds), and then to Texas Stadium in the 70's. All this time, Ownby was pretty much a practice facility and used for soccer games (Dallas Tornado home field in the 70's)

In 1989, Ownby was a dump and there wasn't a ton of money poured into it to make it a classic-but-updated stadium. The SWC broke up and SMU went to the WAC, and moved back to the Cotton Bowl full time in the 90's until Ford Stadium opened on the Ownby site in 2000.
