RE: RollingStone: Why you should root for the Marshall Thundering Herd
Good to see this point being brought up. It just goes to show how much more this new system really separates the P5 from the rest of us. We have one shot to put a team in an access bowl and that's the highest we would ever get. The playoff is basically unattainable for anyone outside the P5 barring some sort of massive shift in public perception. We'd have to hope for the conference as a whole to improve dramatically, while also playing at least 2 high level P5 teams a year (and beating them), even then i'm sure they'd find a way to keep one of us out.

RE: RollingStone: Why you should root for the Marshall Thundering Herd
Good article. However, I gotta agree with this sentence that I saw in one of the comments:
Quote:One good season by means of an extremely weak schedule doesn't earn you a spot at the big table.
That is a very legitimate point. If Marshall was undefeated and had played at least ONE (1) P5 school --and won the game-- it would be on much firmer ground to earn the respect it seeks. And if Marshall was undefeated and had played and beaten 2 P5 schools (like LA Tech did 2 years ago), we wouldn't even be having this discussion. The Herd would be in the Top 5.
I lay this one at the feet of the Marshall AD. He knew he was going to have a good football team this year, yet he apparently did NOTHING to bolster his teams schedule in order to showcase the schools best team in school history. Why not? He really set Marshall up for failure.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall if Marshall finishes 13-0, and ECU finishes 11-1 with wins over Va Tech, UNC, Cincy, and UCF.
Would be an interesting decision...

One thing about Rolling Stone Magazine they always tell it like it is! Now, if some of the mainstream media had the cojones to actually report the truth about the arbitrary, biased and tilted nature of the 4 team CARTEL-5 Playoff System; that would be refreshing!

When the schedule was made we were playing Louisville, ECU, UCF, Memphis, Southern Miss, UAB, and teams from the West that are no longer here.
He can't account for conference realignment and ND joining the ACC.

True, but there are also ugly wins. Too many of those keep you out of the Access Bowl when your counterpart is beating teams by 30-40 points a game.

SOS matters...ECU still has Cincy and UCF to play.

This is becoming such a lame argument. SOS does matter, not Names on Schedule. ECU hasn't even beat a team with a winning record. In what world is a team considered really good when they haven't beat teams that even win. Just cause a named team is more recognizable, doesn't make them a strong opponent.
Just come to reality, CUSA and AAC are full of bad teams. Debating who beat the more bad teams just sounds stupid. In my opinion AAC and CUSA are interchangeable this season. To tell yourself differently is just being a homer. ECU won't even win the conference when this is all said and done.

It's true. ECU's SOS has dropped every week as well though. Virginia Tech just got destroyed. UNC and South Carolina will both probably lose tomorrow. Won't be surprised if their OOC ends up looking like this:
USC: 6-6
UNC: 4-8
VTech: 6-6
ECU has allowed 21 points a game to 3 of the worst offenses in the country in their past 3 games. I won't really be surprised if they lose before UCF at this point.

RE: RollingStone: Why you should root for the Marshall Thundering Herd
If Marshall is the only undefeated team left in the nation, I think they get in.. I think that will play an important part psychologically on the committee, if that happens.
At this point in the season I think it's pretty clear that Marshall is the better team. ECU's best wins are getting less impressive, ECU is looking less impressive in their games, etc. That could change. Honestly I think ECU drops one and makes it easy on the committee.
I really wouldn't want to be the West division champ come Championship Saturday. Marshall will be out for total annihilation in front of the entire country.

Season is far from over...ECU still has to play @Cincy and UCF.
Your guess at how those teams will finish is just that...a guess

Beat me to it. If a W is a W, why do all the ECU posters come here to tell us why the ECU W is more valuable than the Marshall W?

Not just any P-5 program, a very good P-5 program. For me, beating a bottom rung P-5 isn't better than beating a upper level G-5 program.
