Solich on the Broncos:
Quote:“I think they are a football team that has a good combination of things. They’re athletic up front and on both sides of the ball. That generally gives you a chance every time you step out onto the football field. They have themselves the kind of runner that you look for to establish a running game and they have the kind of thrower you look for. They have two corners that are lock down corners that allows them to play a lot of man coverage and forces you to look elsewhere other than at the wideouts. They have good movement; they don’t put themselves in longevity situations a lot from the offensive side of it. They have good offensive schemes and you don’t find them putting themselves in position to have what we’ll call a, “dead play,” a play that you don’t have much of a shot at when the ball is snapped. They’re a good functional football team that is talented.”

On scoring early in the game:
“We’ve been getting off to a slow start for a few games and we wanted to change that, we didn’t want that to happen again. We wanted field position and we have a pretty good return team and you figure if you get a decent return and get a few first downs you’re at least establishing field position with a punt. If you can play well enough to put a score on the board, especially seven points, that just gets the momentum on your side and gets you rolling a little bit. We wanted to break what was happening to us, in terms of getting behind early.”

PJ on his respect for Frank Solich:
Quote:“He’s one of the greatest coaches in the modern era,” Fleck said of his Ohio counterpart. “It’s really an honor to coach against him.”

For Fleck, the respect comes not only for the job Solich has done professionally but because of a personal connection. He said Solich didn’t freeze him out when Fleck was asking for advice as a first-time head coach in early 2013.

“He was one of the only guys willing to share and to help. He’ll talk to you,” Fleck said. “That meant a lot to me.”

Fleck has helped the Broncos rebound from a 1-11 season in 2013 to a 4-3 mark so far this fall. His long-term objective is to give the game as much as Solich has, to endure as long as the Ohio coach has.

“I’m trying to be Frank Solich, actually,” Fleck said.

As the national media discusses the oh so important Lane Kiffin tenure at Tennessee and his various missteps one of the things that you notice is he came in taking shots at guys like Urban Meyer and Steve Spurrier. PJ Fleck has gotten a fair share of criticism from some folks on here but its striking how deferential and respectful he is when publicly speaking about people in the coaching profession. He's been glowing when talking about guys like Mark Dantonio Frank Beamer and now Frank Solich. He isn't putting anything on the others teams bulletin board.

He has also taken some shots - specifically from Chuck Martin and indirectly from Pete Lembo - and, as far as I know, has not responded.

He responded by beating Lembo on their homecoming 04-rock

But didn't rub it in taking the knee with the clock winding down. They tried framing that as clock management, it wasn't that, it was good sportsmanship and managing the long term relationship. Very mature. I wanted Franklin to punch it in so bad. But they didn't do that.

I think you're thinking of the end of the BG game, Ernie. Classy move, though, for sure.
