SOT: EX-Houston Cougar Kevin Kolb Ends career With Concussion Syndrome
We can't know the conflict of dealing with pain and the desire to succeed that concussions sometimes bring:

Hate to hear that. Kolb was a competitor.

life can be cruel at times...he had the skills but the world wasnt ready to give him an oppurtunity

wins the eagles starting job but gets a concussion only to have vick take over

goes to arizona wins the starting job again but gets another concussions and arizona decides to drop him becuase they dont want to pay someone that much with health issue

goes to buffalo becomes the favorite to win the job only to get another concussion in preseason this time career ending

Kolb never had an offensive line when he played in the NFL. He will always be remembered by UH fans as the QB who helped the Coogs win a conference championship.

Espn had a great show on 30 for 30 called Broke. They talked about the physical toll it takes and the medical bills that basically span a lifetime after playing a few years in the NFL. It was incredibly sobering to watch, by the end I felt bad for the explayers.

Much like David Klingler. Another super-talented ex-UH QB who's NFL career was derailed by an extremely poor OL and injuries. Of all the great UH QBs, DK was easily the most physically gifted.

Sad to hear.

As a Hurricanes fan, I'm scared for Jeff Skinner. His concussion in the preseason this year sounds like Kolb's last one - more incidental contact than a typical big blow.

To play football you should really really like it because you'll carry the pain with you the rest of your life. It's a fun game but our bodies really aren't built to take that punishment day after day and the concussions are the worst injuries. I love the game but talked our son out of playing it and now I'm glad we did.

I was a big fan of the Houston run-and-shoot offense in those days. My favorite offense of all time.
If ran properly...it cannot be stopped.
I will never know where they got the idea for 4 wide receivers to run that offense.
Should have been two wideouts, and a combo of either 2 fb types who could catch...or 2 TEs who could catch as slotbacks.
In either case the slotbacks needed to be able to hold or sustain a block.
Glenn Ellison, the man who invented the offense held the belief that the pass was no better than a run.
His offense included traps, sweeps, misdirection...a far cry from the ole Mouse Davis draw play up the middle.
