Charlotte Guard Shawn Lester Leaving Program
Shawn Lester has decided he will try to go pro internationally.

He just had a kid at the end of September, so speculation is that he must have decided to attempt to go pro to provide for his new family.

Sucks for the program, but if that is indeed why he left, hard to fault him for trying to earn a living so he can take care of his kid.

There goes 12PPG off our roster and arguably the best 6th man in CUSA.

03-banghead03-banghead03-banghead

And he should have been a starter anyway. Played and scored more than anyone on the team. Everyone (almost) except Major wanted him to start last season.

Oh well. Looks like Keyshawn Woods and Torin Dorn will get a lot more playing time. I really liked Lester. Sad to see him leave.

RE: Charlotte Guard Shawn Lester Leaving Program
Charlotte's basketball problems are bigger than just another player leaving, or the coach being in over his head. It is a culture issue and starts with the chancellor, the AD, the coach and then on down to the players.

First it's the grades, then it's a baby, for others it was drugs, for some it was attitude, other times it's the coach, then it's the players, then it's a trouble maker. Sadly, This has become our culture, the cross we bear, our curse, And our realty.

Sadly, I can't do anything but agree.

Can any Charlotte fan tell me about Ivan Benkovic? Will he play this year? What do you expect from him?

He will play.

He's a good shooter. Can't really tell you much else about him because he didn't see a ton of play time his freshman year. He shot a hair over 40% from 3 though.

He's a big guard at 6'7.

Good shooter and has good basketball IQ but isn't fleet of foot and can't guard quicker guards very well.

Has that changed since his freshman year? No idea he was out with a back injury the whole of last season.

He's not a very good defender to say the least.

I doubt the back injury helps him with his defense. Maybe it depends on how serious it was, but lack of mobility was an issue for him. He was doing ok earlier in the season with his defense, but struggled later on (probably better opponents, teams figuring out how to attack him, and maybe a little of a freshman hitting the wall).

He is a fantastic shooter though, and I think if he gets the chance he'll be able to score a lot of points off the bench for us. We could use his shooting given there aren't too many other good shooters on the team at the moment.

True, but his liability in this area is over-stated imo. He wasn't much worse than some others on our team.

Thanks for the responses. I was wondering how deep you would be in the backcourt with Lester leaving. I know Henry and Williams will play a ton of minutes, and probably Ogbueze too, but I wasn't sure about the backups. To an outsider, it looks like Charlotte will go six deep (Henry, Williams, Clayton, Thorne, Sullivan, Obgueze) who will play heavy minutes. Probably need another 1-2 to step up and get 10-15 minutes per game. I'm not sure who that will be.

Keyshawn Woods was a 4 star on scout (3 star on the other services) and one of the best players in NC.

The coaches have had great things to say about Torin Dorn so far.

I expect both to see a good bit of playing time. We'll probably play 3 guards a lot since we don't really have a true SF.

I anticipate that either Woods or Dorn (maybe both) get more minutes than Benkovic.

We have plenty of depth at guard, but not much in the post. We only have 4 post players and one of those might as well just be a pair of empty shoes at the end of the bench.

You guys weren't deep in the post last year either, right? I think most games you'll be fine unless someone gets in foul trouble. Clayton and Thorne will eat a lot of minutes.

Nah, we had the same issues in the post last year. This year we essentially replace Marcus Bryan (who was only about 6'6 anyway) with Bernard Sullivan, a transfer from Clemson.

No idea how well Bernard will do. He didn't do much at Clemson, but he was a top 100 recruit on all the recruiting services in HS. He's a little taller and a lot more athletic than Bryan, so I'm confident he will more than replace Bryan's production. If he could give us 10+ PPG, it'd be a tremendous boost for us.
