Report: University of Texas to Pay Every Players $10,000 a Year

And so it begins.

The Dallas Morning News reports that Texas athletic director Steve Patterson announced yesterday that the University of Texas will begin paying approximately $10,000 to each athlete in response to recent court decisions as well as to cover expenses not otherwise covered by athletic scholarships. Patterson said the total cost to Texas would be approximately $6 million a year.

One thing to note is that although Patterson doesn't say it, the math indicates that this isn't just for football or even men's basketball. $6 million provides a $10,000 payment to 600 athletes, which means that it's likely to be every male and female athlete at Texas. No discrimination between the rowing team and the football team.

The $10,000 estimated amount per players breaks down into two parts: the first is to cover expenses not covered by scholarships. It's things like meals outside the training table and trips home. So it's an average. To use an example at Nebraska, Josh Banderas would get less for trips to his parents home across town in Lincoln than kicker Mauro Bondi would receive for trips home to Boca Raton, Fla.

The second part is a $5000 payment in compensation for the university to use his image. That's the amount set by U.S. District Court Judge Claudia Wilken in her ruling on the Ed O'Bannon case. The number may be arbitrary, but it was set by the courts, not Texas.

Why would Texas players agree to such a pay cut?

News like this makes it easier to undestand why it doesn't appear that North Carolina is in "crisis mode" because of the alleged widespread academic fraud that they are accused of.

Why does this make it easier to understand?
(Just trying to understand your point.)

In addition, how is his UNC issue not classified as a total lack of institutional control and not result in SEVERE penalties???

I look for the $EC players to now form a union and go on strike. They cannot afford to take such a drastic pay cut.

It's not a pay cut. It's a bonus on top of their base pay

It won't stop here. $10k will become $15k and so on as the big boys keep raising the price of poker until only 12-20 schools are paying the top level of compensation.

Then it will devolve into not all athletes getting the same payment and throw in signing bonuses on top of that.

It's just professional athletics at that point with no limits or controls.

Watch and see. In less than 10 years it'll happen.

I think public interest and support will decline right along with that. It will kill the golden goose.

At that point, why watch the minor league pro team Longhorns when there's the majors like the Cowboys to watch?

I agree. In less than 20 years, this whole college athletics thing will crumble due to greed. The rich keep getting richer, but only until the poor (who made the rich rich) have had enough. Then all hell will break loose. History repeats itself.

What is the singing bonus of the next great Texas QB?

I am SOOOOOOOOOO glad that I played for my school, my team, my town.

This is all complete BS. It was an honor to play for my school, and get a free education. VERY thankful. GTG!

RE: Report: University of Texas to Pay Every Players $10,000 a Year
The moment a player gets paid cash above the table is the moment this whole thing we have loved our whole lives dies.

This used to be about your school playing their school. And yes, even way back at Harvard and Yale there were ringers, but the vast majority of players and teams were on the up and up and the playing field was at least sorta fair. These last 30 years have seen the "amateur" thing completely crumble and this is the beginning of the end.

Greed takes over whenever the chance is given. And greed has taken over college athletics.
