LOL!

Red Buttons used to have a joke for that, the punch line was along the lines of "what's the matter, can't you think of anyone either?"

RE: HOMECOMING GAME THREAD!!!!
I'm looking forward to visiting Kalamazoo, but I'm not expecting my team to win. I think Western covers comfortably. Ohio's offense is not good. They were gifted a lot of great field position in the Akron game. The line is a bit banged up, and the best running back has a sketchy ankle. Our offensive coordinator mystifyingly sends tiny Daz Patterson between the tackles every other play. Our second-string quarterback improved a little last week, but he's not a great thrower and looks lost half the time. The strength of the team is the front four on defense. The secondary is mediocre on their good days and horrific on the bad ones (see lowlights of the Central game or even the win against awful Idaho). Our punter and placekicker are two of the more important players on the team, which should tell you what kind of year it's been in Athens. Looking forward to Waldo, hoping for a nice and friendly atmosphere, and eager for a pint or six of Bell's. 04-cheers

RE: HOMECOMING GAME THREAD!!!!
A few things worry me about this game:
- After us knocking off BGSU and them beating Akron, they are right back in the thick of the East race... only to be double digit dogs against us. Solich will have them motivated.
- We are going from one of the MAC's worst defenses (BG) to one of the MAC's best defenses (OU) in one week. Hope we can adjust quickly.
- We are still a young team. This is kind of a classic let-down situation after a big road win, and now traveling back home for homecoming.
- Ohio doesn't back down and let up when trailing, unlike what we saw a little bit against BG. They're tougher than that. We'll have to face some adversity in this game to win it.

I think it's a little higher scoring than we expect. I'd be surprised if we covered that 10 pt. spread. I've got us winning something like:

WMU 31
Ohio 27

This seems mutually exclusive.. you say we are facing one of the best defenses after playing one of the worse and put up more points. Just saying.

Yes, my score assumes two things:
1) Ohio comes out hungry, stuns us a little at first.
2) We persevere, adjust accordingly, and ultimately put up enough points to win.

Also, if Franklin walks that last carry into the endzone -- pending PAT -- we're at 33 pts. in that game. I think our scoring was lower against BGSU because we committed to the run and settled to eat clock instead of running our offense at a slightly faster pace.

I am sure you will enjoy your stay in Kzoo. I hope not celebrating a victory though. I was on your campus last spring, and loved it. One of the very best I have been on. Thanks for your insight; I always like getting the scoop from a faithful alum of our opponent.

I agree. Ohio is more often mediocre than Good -- but they're always a tough (bob) cat. They'll be ready to rumble. We can't be riding high off our BGSU win.

Quote:- We are going from one of the MAC's worst defenses (BG) to one of the MAC's best defenses (OU) in one week. Hope we can adjust quickly.

Yes -- and here's what our excitement is blinding us from: BGSU, horrible D, held us to under 350 yards. Ohio got 500+ on them. Ohio, with their bad O. Our O finally seemed to start rolling in the 4th Q when BGSU's D -finally- got tired and Franklin was able to pile up yards. But that should happen against an Ohio D, not a BGSU one. Hey, maybe BGSU's D stepped up to the plate? To some degree, maybe. But my point is -- I worry about our O being able to put up points.

Quote:- We are still a young team. This is kind of a classic let-down situation after a big road win, and now traveling back home for homecoming.

True. One reason why I'm not jumping-for-joy, marking down Ohio & @Miami-OH as sure-fire Wins, with banking on going 1-for-2 against NIU & @CMU. This Ohio game IS a real test.

Quote:- Ohio doesn't back down and let up when trailing, unlike what we saw a little bit against BG. They're tougher than that. We'll have to face some adversity in this game to win it.

They're a grittier team. And we shook loose BGSU's QB some, which disrupted their O -- and kept our D off the field, etc. I would see us being a 3pt favorite, since it's at home. A classic "even match".

This will be a true test to see where we're at. If we can get our O to get 1st downs and move the chains in the game -- I think we'll be OK. My #1 concern is Ohio stuffing our O. BGSU did a pretty darn good job of that, and that's what scares me going into this game against Ohio.

I think they'll come to play on Saturday, but FWIW they didn't have a very strong response when the Chips went up on them in Mount Pleasant a couple weeks ago.

Records can be thrown out the window when a game is played.

Both teams want to win. Western has to be at the top of their game to pull this off.

Nothing is a given. Play like crazy Broncos. Don't relax!!!! You're only as good as this game.

RE: HOMECOMING GAME THREAD!!!!
Good grief. Reading this thread, I had to check the schedule to make sure this wasn't VT we were playing again. Have some faith that PJ will have them ready to play. Despite what some here want to believe, Ohio is not a juggernaut. Far from it. They have some good players on D but come on. We went toe to toe with Toledo and BG and we fear/are nervous about Ohio? Really?

While there is always the chance of a letdown, I'm not worried about Ohio at all. Maybe it is just me but I sense an overwhelming caution about lining up against a team that would likely be challenging for the basement in the MAC west, even in this down year in the league. If there is no letdown by our guys, this one will be over well before the 4th quarter starts.

WMU 34
Ohio 17

Quote:We went toe to toe with Toledo and BG and we fear/are nervous about Ohio? Really?

I'm not trying to be a Debbie-Downer or anything, but against Toledo -- the weather stymied us And them -- and yes, we Should have won (just give me 1 of those misses, please) for an upset. Toledo is an upset-able team, but yes, we went toe to freaking toe. BG's QB -- we rocked him, that helped us -- but our O was nothing to be confident about for 3 Quarters, with the ball so much against such a bad D (that Ohio put 500+ on; us - in the 300s with all that time utilized).

I called Ohio's win against Akron (in the main MACbbs thread) -- not that I think Ohio's some juggernaut by any means -- but they have a good D, and Akron's O isn't so hot. And Ohio Can put up some points. If our D steps up and we do our job all good with them (that I'm not so worried about) -- we'll be in good shape.

What I *do* fear is our O getting stymied by them as well, and it coming down to who has more turnovers/penalties/luck/Special Teams/etc. I don't look at this like a "Yeah, we got it." I don't think we're Quite there yet to call that. But hey, I HOPE to be wrong. If our O breaks out on them -- I'm PJ Fleck for Halloween.

RE: HOMECOMING GAME THREAD!!!!
the wildcard for Ohio depends on who plays QB. Derrius Vick was the started until a knee injury vs Idaho in Wk4, JD Sprague has been the starter since. Sprague is a nifty runner and is competitive but struggles with accuracy, only completing about 50% of his passes. Vick is more of the complete package and is more experienced. If Vick can play I like Ohio's chances, if not, its going to be tough.

Ohio has played in the MACC three times since 2006. By comparison, over that same time period, BG has been there once: last year. Toledo? Zero appearances.

I may just be speaking for myself, but I don't really sense fear or nervousness toward Ohio - just a healthy respect for what their program has accomplished in the past decade under Solich.
