What's Your Teams Most.......part 2
1. Lopsided loss
2. gut wrenching loss
3. embarrassing loss
4. WTH just happened loss?

For me
1. New Mexico 2004 lost 72-8....we were a bad FCS but that was just embarrassing. Fortunately, most people don't even care, or know, about that game.

2. UNI 2005 - FCS Semi Final. The game the FCS world knows as "The Knee". Tied with 1:27 left, the ball on the 42, all time outs left and our coach decided to lose faith in the team that had come this far and make the QB take a knee(s) to run out the clock and play for a win in OT. We lost. Our PK was one of the (if not the) best PK's in FCS.
Over 400 yds of offense and he shuts that down playing to not lose; which they ultimately did 40-37. I was literally sick as a dog; partially from drinking, partly from the gut wrenching game and not being able to process what Bailiff did to this team. I have talked to several players from that squad and they didn't want to do anything after the game except kill the coach and go home. Nobody volunteered for the presser and the ones told they had to do it walked in, sat down, got up and walked out.

3. ULL 2014 - have to go with this one because it just was. I don't know who TXST put out on the field this past week but it wasn't the team I'd been watching previously. Something is seriously wrong in SM and they best get it fixed.

4. SELA 2009 - If anyone can blow a big lead, this team could. Our GS moment, I guess. We were up by 24 with 9:06 left and lost this game in OT 51-50. That win would have given us a share of the SLC title (having beaten SFA) and another playoff appearance.

Ouch.

And speaking of that:
2005- Texas State- I was one of those fans who were screaming for blood after we lost that game. Sewak got canned and He Who Shall Not Be Named was brought in, stomped on our traditions, and ditched us in the middle of recruiting.

In hindsight, I was so wrong and I regret the knee jerk reaction by Southern's athletic department.

I dunno about all those categories. But

ULM Monsoon Game
I don't know what year, 2007? Most miserable performance ever in the middle of Noah's flood....televised. Steve Roberts.

Pittsburg State
1989. 34-13 loss to a Division II team at home.

The Punt
2010 vs. Western Kentucky. Leading by 7 with 54 seconds left we bad-snapped a punt giving WKU the ball at the 22. They tied the game. We lost on a 2-point conversion in OT. Steve Roberts.

Last Year
Beaten like dogs on national television by ULL. It would have been bad even without the horrendous play-calling. Harsin surrendered before the fans did and got booed.

That's nothing. In 1981 we were playing SELA in Hammond and had a 35-7 lead at halftime. ULM lost the game in regulation 50-47. Winning that game would have given us a 6-5 record for that season but it didn't happen.

RE: What's You Teams Most.......part 2
Gut Wrenching:

2013 WKU: Wild Game, Down 14-0 in the 1st quarter, our starting QB sustains a knee injury and is done. Fredi Knighten is the backup that Harsin had so little confidence in that he had taken maybe 5 snaps the previous month. Scared to death that Knighten cant throw, we change the offense to some hybrid offense that Georgia Southern would be proud of and abandon the pass completely. Behind McKissic and Gordon we come all the way back, and take the lead in the 4th quarter. WKU drives to the AState 6 with a minute left. From that point on, the officials decided they were going to decide who won. On a Fourth and Goal pass, WKU scores a questionable TD, but its overturned by a 15 yard chop block penalty that looked questionable. On Fourth and Goal from the 21, AState gets flagged for a phantom roughing the QB call after WKU threw an incompletion. After stuffing them twice, we get called for a pass interference on the goal line that was borderline. Finally, on the 9th play from inside the ASU 10, WKU finally scores with 10 seconds left to win the game.

Embarrasing: 2013 Memphis for anyone who had to sit through that disaster. We sent about 5K to the Liberty Bowl, and proceeded to look listless and lifeless in a 35-7 loss

Miserable: 2010 UL-Lafayette: Otherwise known as the last game between the teams that didn't decide a league title. With both teams coaches on the hot seat, the game was played 2nd week of the season at 3:00 in the afternoon. Temperature was 95 degrees, with field temperatures nearing 120. I remember very little about the game other than the fact there was constant cramps for both teams, trainers were battling dehydration, and the Cajuns won late.

Others:

2006 SMU: Coming off a bowl season, we traveled to Dallas to play a mediocre SMU squad, and got pounded 55-9. A student at the time, I was tasked with editing that game film together for the ASUTV rebroadcast. Meaning I got to watch every play in all its horror, twice.

2010 WKU: In a must win game to save Steve Roberts job, we hosted the Toppers. They took a big lead, we came back to tie it, and then took the lead. With 1 minute left up 7, and the ball at midfield, all we had to do was punt it deep. Toppers had no timeouts, and weren't driving 90 plus with their current roster. Snap went over the punters head. They got the ball at our 30 instead, ted the game on the game's final play, were going to go for 2 and the win, but a false start penalty forced them to take OT. After we scored first in OT, they drove down and scored on 4th down to cut it to 1, then ran a trick on the 2 point conversion and won by 1 WKU caused us a lot of misery in football during their time.

2007 ULM: A monsoon that lasted for the entire game. I kept expecting animals to line up 2 by 2 to get on Noah's Ark. We could barely pass, or hold onto the football, and got beat for our trouble.

1. 1996 Florida Gators 62-14
2. Probably the 1998 I-AA Title game - Southern loses to UMASS 55-43 with 7 fumbles
3. Central Connecticut State. 17-13. Coming off a 8-5 playoff season averaging 45+ points a game, our new coach calls this game a "scrimmage" and we lose.
4. All of 2006.

gut wrenching was our 2nd match against NDSU in the semi finals. they are 4th and 5 at the 10 yard line or something. Every GS fan watching the game was yelling at the TV that they would run a Qb draw,..... and they did.... and they scored..... and then after marching down the field quickly we trotted out a kid that was on the soccer team a weak before to kick a 45 yarder to win, and it got blocked.

1. Lopsided loss
2. gut wrenching loss
3. embarrassing loss
4. WTH just happened loss?

1. Troy at Georgia, 2014. Troy lost 0-66. I'm sure there are a few more since the start of Troy football in the early 1900s, but this one is bad.

2. Troy at LSU, 2008. Troy lead #20 LSU in Death Valley 31-3 late in the 3rd QTR. Instead of eating clock, Troy coaches opted to continue with what brought us there, the passing game. LSU scored 37 unanswered points, 30 of which were in the 4th QTR. Troy lost 40-31.

3. Troy vs Abilene Christian, 2014. Not much to say here. Troy lost 38-35 to a team that was/is FCS Transitional and was Division II in 2013.

4. See above.

Honorable Mention:
A mixture of 2,3, and 4. See below.

HM. Troy vs FAU, 2007. Troy was steamrolling the conference in 2007 beating teams handedly shutting out Arkansas State for the first time ever at their home stadium 27-0. The Trojans gift wrapped UNT seven turnovers and still beat them 45-7. After beating MTSU 45-7 at home, Troy was undefeated in conference play and hosted FAU at home for the last game of the season. Troy beat their SBC opponents by an average of 18 points per game. FAU's margin was a mere 2 points per game. The Owls had barely skated by and had one loss in OT coming into the Troy game. Troy had been the better team all season, and had the mantra "Road Back To New Orleans" plastered on the jumbotron all season. FAU was turning it on late, crushing FIU 55-0 the week before Troy. The Trojans came out flat in the last game of the season, thinking victory was inevitable, and got behind 35-12 at halftime. Troy roared back, allowing only a FG in the second half. The score was 32-38 with 1:43 left in the game, Troy was on FAU's 30, and QB Haugabook tried to connect with WR Smokey Hampton on 4th down for the game winning TD, and failed to connect. That scene of excitement in the FAU players at that moment was something I'd never forgotten. We only had one bowl game that year, which FAU took the bid for due to the tiebreaker over co-champion Troy. It was a dark december as Troy sat at home during bowl season. FAU went on to beat Memphis in the New Orleans Bowl. Troy avenged the loss in 2008, 31-17.

Absolutely gut wrenching...

2004 Arkansas State vs Memphis: Tigers came into the game ranked #25. Leading 35-33, Arkansas State only had to run out the remaining 2:45 to secure their first victory over a ranked opponent. From the ESPN recap article:

Quote:Two big defensive plays and frantic fourth-quarter comeback gave Memphis (No. 25 AP) its first win as a ranked team.

Tim Goodwell forced a fumble and returned it 10 yards for a touchdown with 2:22 left and the Tigers scored 21 points in the final three minutes for a 47-35 comeback victory over Arkansas State on Saturday night.

Goodwell, who dislodged the ball from Arkansas State quarterback Nick Noce, gave the Tigers (3-0) their first lead of the game, 40-35.

Then it was Scott Vogel's turn. He intercepted a deflected pass with 1:59 left to set up DeAngelo Williams' 16-yard scoring run with 59.7 seconds remaining.

I can still see Noce getting hit and fumbling the ball away...

One More

2001: McNeese State (It was one of those Southland Schools) Otherwise known as the Thanksgiving Day Massacre. Playing a game on Thanksgiving because of the rescheduling done around the Sept 11 Terrorist Attacks, a 2 win ASU team was finishing up a miserable year. We fell behind big at half, and our AD at the time decided to get a head start on things and sent out a press release in the 3rd quarter indicating that the entire coaching staff had been fired. We find out later that the coaches were aware of this the previous week, its just we foolishly decided to do it during the game before everyone went out of town for the Holiday break. Unfortunately the press didn't know this and it got reported we fired our coach on Thanksgiving. Poor Joe Hollis showed up at his postgame press conference and got asked questions about his own firing.

Press didn't do that game justice. We had the ball first and 10 with 3:00 left on our own 20. Memphis timeout situation meant 1 first down and we beat a ranked team for the first time ever. After a couple run plays get stuffed, we tried to roll Noce out, and he just lost the ball inexplicably.

I really felt like that game was finally made up for when we beat #25 Kent State in the 2013 Go Daddy Bowl. First Bowl win and first over a ranked team at the same time.

Backstory on that. Our kicker or the previous four years was all but automatic. He missed his first extra point ever in the last week of the regular season his senior year and rarely missed a field goal from any distance. We tried out three or four different kickers throughout the year and none of them could handle the pressure as we had missed XP's and chip shots all season. Many of our fans think that if we would have had a decent kicker we would have won a game or two more, would have been higher seeded and wouldn't have played North Dakota State until the title game. So before the NDSt game we held open tryouts for a kicker and pick up a guy off the soccer team who had played as a kicker in high school. His only college kick ever was to try and send us to the championship game. The kick was blocked and we lose. Nobody blamed him for the loss but once again if we had a good kicker, we might have won that game and gone on to win number 7.

we had 2 regular season losses that year. Citdel by 2 or 3... We missed 3 FG's.... and lost to appy by 2.... we missed 4 fg's that game. We would have had home field advantage and not seen them until either the NC game, or in the semi final game in Statesboro. With either one of those scenarios we more than likely get 7.

NDSt. was the only team that could have stopped us in 2011 or 2012. We had a damn good team an were on a roll in the playoffs both years but just couldn't get it done in that hellhole of a dome. On a neutral or home field it could have been a different story. Those years were my only real chance of seeing Georgia Southern win a National Championship. My friends and I had already started planning for the trip to Frisco. The ironic part is if we had beaten them either year we would have faced our current coach for the title.

That's easy - 2001 vs. Furman in a semi-final game where we lost 24-17. I had been watching Southern for 4 years and that was the first home loss I had seen. When the game ended, no one knew what to do...

For GS 3 gut wrenchers stand out... the 1988 1-AA title game loss to Furman, the 1998 1-AA title game loss to UMass, and the 2001 semi-final loss to Furman.

The most lopsided loss was to Miami in the mid 90's... I forget the year and the score but it was 50-something to nothing.

The most embarrassing loss was losing to West Georgia at Paulson. Again, I can't remember the year but it was in the mid 90's. That was shameful on so many levels.

For me

1. Texas A&M after we beat them at home in 1993.
2. 2014 LaTech
3. Wofford in the 90's
4. McNeese in 2009 (I not sure about the year)

RE: What's Your Teams Most.......part 2
I'm pretty sure our most lopsided loss was against Florida in 1996. One of our worst teams in program history against a IA national champion. I believe it's the only time we've lost by 50+.

I have which nothing to add to those!!
