Memphis and a P5 conference
What does Memphis need to do to are a step up into a P5 when things start rolling again? Where are we soft?

I hate to say it but I think our shot at the big time died when the Big East broke apart

P5 and football are essentially synonymous

RE: Memphis and a P5 conference
Despite what some some uneducated journalists have said, we have fantastic football facilities now. The Liberty Bowl is in fantastic shape. Our football practice facilities are also top notch and we have our new IPF going up soon which is also a beautiful work of art. Our basketball facilities are obviously top notch; especially when the new practice facility is completed. Women's basketball could step it up a bit. Smaller sports such as mens and women's golf, mens and women's soccer, and mens and women's tennis are in good shape. Many STAY in the Top 25. Our baseball program needs to take just a little step up. It would also help if people would actually go to games. As far as the school goes, being granted a research grant was HUGE. We need to improve our academics just a bit, but not near as much as some goofballs think when they talk about "Memphis' poor academics." Despite Shirley Raines not giving a hoot about sports, she DID vastly improve our academic profile during her tenure. We have many grad schools that are very highly rated in the US. Our campus is beautiful. So what's it going to take for Memphis to take the next step up? Easy. Winning in football. (And averaging 45k in attendance)

RE: Memphis and a P5 conference
I actually think that for the first time in recent history (last 50yrs), our athletics will not keep us back. This includes facilities, team performance, and $$$ contributed.
Here's what will hold us back:
We are still not near a top 100 academic institution
Our endowment is tiny compared to other P5s- this is a big problem...we are one of the smallest in the AAC...

Keep athletics on top and improving...moving from very good to elite in basketball and being consistently very good in football. We also need to win the conference once every 5 years.

Turn back the clock about 70 years and call themselves Tennessee State or UT-Memphis

Hasn't been a problem for Miami, Pitt or Louisville.

I agree with everything except baseball. We need more than "take a little step up". Our baseball program in probably our weakest sport outside of women's basketball program. There is NO excuse in not having a top flight program in being in the South. Most all the East coast schools routinely beat us. Need new coach that can recruit and sign higher quality players!

Be ready...that's what we can do...be ready when the next mighty shake up comes. Keep improving our FB program...just like we're doing. And only make the news in 'good' ways like grants, academics, indoor practice fields and bridges over the train track. Always Fly under the radar in all the 'bad' ways.

The thing I wonder about is how the push to make the college athletes pros will affect the situation. I haven't studied this or the conference realignment thing in depth like many here have, so I'm just throwing this out there off the top of my head.

Back when Memphis was Memphis State, Louisville wasn't any more of a powerhouse than we were no matter what it was called.

So you think the reason we are in this situation is because we were named Memphis State? I think it's because we've sucked at football for the better part of 50 years.

You know you would think the SEC would eventually go looking for another basketball power. Its not like they need anymore football or baseball cred.

You can blame that boob for only about 15 of the 50 years. I've noticed that you've been all over his jock of late. Are you gunning for Melba's bottom b!tch spot?
