Fair enough, Mimi. And you are right, it's an opinion. We've all got em. But these aren't potshots at Joe. I just happen to think Joe was one of the most overrated Tigers to ever wear the blue and gray.

Yes...that is yet another potshot...but you were not the poster originally being responded to.
Yes, the overrated comment is a troll for me, I get that, but continued needles being levied at a former player speak much more about the failings of the poster...not the kid being plucked.

More overrated than Parris London...
Or Pierre Niles...
Or Adonis Thomas...
I think your bias is showing.

According to Oxford Dictionaries, a potshot is a "criticism, especially a random or unfounded one" . You certainly criticize Joe - an alumnus and four year player who choose Memphis over many other suiters.
Is your criticism unfounded? It is a matter of opinion based on expectations. The facts are that Joe is in the top 10 at Memphis in points, assists and steals. He was one of the 30 finalists for the Naismith College Player of the Year (there roughly 4,200 NCAA D-I players). He helped our team make the NCAA Tourney all four years of his tenure - a feat accomplished by less than 5% of all 351 NCAA D-I schools.
The reader may judge if he merited the harsh overrated label designated by a Tiger fan. IMO, Joe earned our respect and thanks.

Id say Adonis is more overrated. Can't remember what London was. Niles was what top 75? I think a lot of the anti Joe stuff stems from the whole KOM thing.

NBA pressure for him or not...if Kedron is even close to being as good as Joe was we a in good shape. He was the best player on the team two years running.
Top ten all time Tiger, maybe time to leave him alone.
Totally agree Mimi. It doesn't encourage prospect recruits to come to Memphis when an all time best player gets "raked" after graduation. Joe doesn't deserve that, true or not.

lol. It's a drain on our own energy levels, as a Tiger family and as individuals, to still hold our expectations of players against the ones who did not meet them...especially the players who have moved on.
I would think we should just make room for the new ones.

Criticisms of me because of my opinions regarding Joe are fine. Those again are my opinions, and I've been consistent with those opinions for several years. Joe was a productive player statistically but certainly not a top ten Tiger, not even close.
Some of you are right, Paris was certainly more overrated as was Deuce Ford.
Moving on to this year, I feel the team and coach will do just fine without Joe.

Recruits do read this messageboard and we cannot escape the responsibility of the impressions we make upon recruits due to our post content.

Recruits, their parents, their handlers, coaches...etc etc etc. I agree. Fans figure into the mix. This is not our playground to vent our every frustration, though it is tempting...lol.

Joe is not a top ten Tiger player. Based on what some have seen of Kedren, I'd take him over Joe right now.
Lee, Penny, Rose, Finch, Kenon, CDR, EP, Tyreke, Ronnie Robinson, Win Wilfong, John Gunn, James Bradley, Rodney Carney and the list could go on. All better than Joe.

I think there is a lot of room between top-10 all time Tiger (I don't think JJ makes that cut, no shame, it's a high standard) and vastly overrated (I think JJ is correctly rated as a very-good, almost great college player who played for our city with pride and honor for 4 years).
I think Joe Jackson was a HELL of a Tiger. Top 10? I don't think so, but that is a tough standard…
Just since Hardaway, not even going Perry or before (Lee/Finch make it a bare minimum of 3 more)…
PG: Hardaway / Rose / Evans
SG: CDR / WBarton
SF: AAnderson
PF: Massie
C: Dorsey
You can also make cases for Wagner, Darius Washington, Dozier, etc.
I think JJ is a HELL of a player and not at all overrated, but top 10 is an awfully tough hill to climb. Thats not a dig on JJ, but rather a testament to how strong our teams history is...

I do not like the concept of formally ranking players because it diminishes the contributions of all Tigers that played in the past and there is much grey area in the subjective exercise. I prefer lauding their feats on an individual basis.

I've no argument to that. JJ is a fine player, I think we can agree on that.

I think Kelly Wise was a helluva player, great player actually. Best footwork ever on a big man here and terrific stats. But Cal got in his head and that was it for him.

Because the team has done fine before Joe...and the team will be fine after Joe. Real risky opinion there...which really was just a sheepish way to once against take a bullying insecure silly shot at a young man.
Team was fine before Penny. Was fine after Penny.
Lots of Memphis fans who dislike Memphis. Your loss.
