Rod Carey feeling the heat in Dekalb
Rod Carey is 16-5 (9-1 in the MAC) overall as NIU's head football coach.

After losing to CMU this past weekend -- his first MAC loss as their head coach mind you -- there are already NIU fans calling for his head.

Here is a list of teams Rod Carey has lost to:
Florida State (Orange Bowl)
Arkansas
Central Mich.
Bowling Green (MAC championship)
Utah State (bowl game)

Hard to believe they're already losing patience with him.

They've become a VERY spoiled fanbase VERY quickly. A lot of the cross board posters that come here are pretty level-headed, but take a look over at their board some time at their threads about why EMU should be kicked from the MAC or why NIU should leave the MAC.

Just web board people, they don't amount to anything real.

Sometimes its just losing the wrong game too much. John Cooper is kind of the poster child for that but to say that he only loses the meaningful games is a tough spot for a coach to be in.

Go find some threads on the CMU board from early in the 2010 season. You'll see the same stuff there. People wanted Enos fired 3-4 games into his first season.

Dip has said it more than once, good luck to you in this league if you don't have a QB. NIU is learning that the hard way, they've been more than spoiled with Harnish and Lynch.

Was that an intended NIU pun?

To be fair -- and they shouldn't be calling for his head, no, but:

- NIU took a step backwards in the middle of games played. They have a lot of talent. They were better earlier in the season, now worse?
- Carey isn't a delightful guy. He's pissy/moany. Sure, we're spoiled with Positive-PJ, but still.
- It's not 1 loss to CMU. It's a compilation: Bad loss to Arkansas, a bye, but struggling to beat Kent St at home -- then soundly thumped by CMU during homecoming.
- He can't take credit for last season totally. He inherited a great program and was within it prior (solid/stable move by NIU) -- so even a not-good coach is going to have a good, winning season.

They're going in the wrong direction. I think this is a time where Carey is in position to prove himself as a HC, which he may be able to do.

With that said, he did bring them to 12-0 Reg Season last year. I could see them not being quite as "elite" later in the season in how they played, then exposed by being blown out by BGSU, then losing to Utah State in a bowl. Too much to say "He should go!" He's in no "Fire Fleck" situation by any means.

I think if NIU goes from 4-1 to 7-5 due to their performance (which is the issue now), then there should be talk about possibly removing him after next year if he doesn't amp it up. The whole concept of hiring within is to keep the engine churning. Very different than getting a New Coach from elsewhere. Cubit coming in doing so well 1st year -- why? He was our OC before. It had that "within" thing going.
