Tailgating... Time for WMU to become FAN FRIENDLY
I am in lot 88 and have been for 12 years? With the same large group of people and we are all season ticket holders. It is now a family lot. We are always in the same spot on the grass by Oakland. When we got there saturday, the parking people tried to make us all park to the west and fill up the lot from there. WE refused to move and ended up having to get the people to talk to their bosses boss before we were allowed to park in the normal spot. Every year, hell every week they try to enforce some new dumb*** rule that is driving people away. I was so pissed we almost went home. Why do we keep giving our money to a place that doesn't want season ticket holders to enjoy their game day experience. The lot never even filled up and they can't seem to figure out that we need a clicker to count how many cars we let in and how many spots we need for season pass holders.

Really ruined my day because this is like the 10th time they have tried something stupid like this. It is hard enough to be a bronco fan without them trying their hardest to push us away. People were leaving the lot when told they could not park where they have for years. One guy had to get the cops to help him get his money back. It has become a joke each year to see how else they can push 30 season ticket holders from enjoying their experience.

I was also in Lot 88 yesterday and was surprised that it didn't fill up. I know it was partially due to the weather but this is 2 or 3 times now in the last few years that I've seen it half-full and wondered what the heck the deal was. Well this explains it a little bit.

I agree that we have one of the LEAST friendly tailgates that I've ever been to. It really is a joke, and is something the University needs to address ASAP. When you are a MAC school competing with larger tailgates in the region (UM, MSU, ND), beggars cannot be choosers.

Couldn't agree more kimbo.

I also was at lot 88 well before the game, like 3:30 ish. Again they tried to direct me as to where to park for setting up. I learned last year just to agree with them and go where ever the heck I wanted to. I must say that the KPD car that was there were very engaging and helpful. We even shared our our brats, soups and deserts with them and invited them back in a couple of weeks for ribs ! Those two officers were the best! Guess you just need to get by the guys handing out the parking tickets.

We have always shared our food with the workers and even gave the guys ribs yesterday. We didn't listen to them either but they followed my wife over and tried to force us to move. It is getting old.

It didn't fill up for Comm University either. They actually stopped letting people in and we counted 30ish empty spots. This is a 12 year or so problem and WMU has lost revenue over this issue.

Yeah. I can understand what they are trying to do but lots of serious tailgaters get there real early to claim the prime spot they are used to. The grassy areas by the building, and along the grass on the east and south. Those spots have traditional users that have tailgated there for years. I'd be upset if they didn't allow that. Sucks.

Email President Dunn. Let him know your status as an ex-football player, alum and season ticket holder. Let him know you saw others treated this way. I will email him too. He responds, and he is usually proactive if there is a legitimate beef.

He is concerned about game day attendance, as he should be. More stories like this could help push them in the right direction

You're right, Stampede. Send all complaints to Dunn. He is the only one that can make something happen. The athletic department (surprisingly) has nothing to do with this. It is all on DPS and parking services. You can also complain to Capt. Carol Dedow with Parking, but nothing will get done. It has to be the President.

Flood his email. john.dunn@wmich.edu

I have had email conversations with him before. I have already sent him one about this. But we need others to email him as well. I didn't make it Saturday, but when I do for Nov 15th, I want to be able to tailgate wherever without harassment.

We usually end up in Lot 88 ourselves... I'm sure I've seen quite a few of you in person before and didn't realize it.

If things are similar when we're up there in a few weeks for Homecoming, I'll certainly add my name to the "email Dunn" list.

Agree 100% Kimbo.

As I have expressed here previously, this is another one of the major reasons that I decided not to renew my season tickets this year. Myself and many that I used to enjoy tailgating with regularly simply didn't care to be there anymore because of all the ridiculousness they are trying to enforce.

The BIGGEST problem we have is that WMU Football is no longer (if it ever was) an event that people want to be a part of. They have made it easier to simply stay away and not deal with the hassles than to want to plan and schedule your entire day around the event.

Durr, I apparently can't read a map. We're usually over in Lot 43. Regardless, I'll try to say hello to some of you fine folks!

One of my tailgating friends took this advice and emailed Dunn. He got two emails from Dunn today and the number for Sharon at public safety. He thinks he might have made some progress. Dunn forwarded his email to Kathy also. Good to hear Dunn seems to have taken it seriously.

We had no problems tailgating up in Lot 1, until leaving the football game when a car was hauling ass around the curve on Oakland Drive by lot 1 and almost hit three people walking back to their cars. A cop saw it and thankfully chased down that car and pulled them over.

Impressive response.

He arrived the year after I graduated so most of my knowledge is second-hand. Still, I think he's been pretty good for the university. He actually came and stood next to me in the stands at CommUniversity night - we talked for a couple minutes after I said I was a grad (we were in the student section) and he asked where I was, what I was doing, etc. So I certainly can't complain about my one in-person interaction with the man.

Kimbo, you don't understand the job of a bureaucrat. Their job is to create regulations and enforce them.

Sure, your clicker solution and some simple math solves the problem of determine when the lot is full, but if the problem is solved it diminishes the need for the bureaucrat.

So look for more, not fewer regulations in the future.
