VT Game Thoughts
Now that my warning has expired, it's back to business...
If you were to tell me before hand we'd lose this game 35-17, I'd have been okay with that result. Unfortunately, we spotted Virginia Tech 14 easy points, 11 of which were right out of the gates:
- Scoop and score fumble recovery TD off of Celiscar's inexplicable opening kick return.
- Pfeifer long snap over punter's head out of the back of the end zone (somewhat troubling that this has happened on a few occasions now with him).
- Chip shot FG miss in 3rd quarter by Haldeman (this was a huge momentum killer).
All three of those special teams mistakes referenced above are mental mistakes and come down to execution. Nothing to do with "poor ST coaching" IMO.
Overall, it's still an end result I can live with. Could we have played better? Yes. Could it have been A LOT worse? Easily. Remember, this is Virginia Tech. Perspective.
I thought the major difference between last year's team and this year's team was basically what we saw in the Iowa game last year. Wheels completely fell off. In this game, I liked our response after making a ton of stupid mental mistakes and going down 11-0 very early.
This team is capable of becoming bowl eligible, but it all depends on Terrell's play. I'll maintain the fact that I believe he's a serviceable MAC quarterback at best. He continues to have accuracy issues and takes WAY too long to get off his first read. Maybe the second one will improve with experience.
On the first drive of the game, Terrell overthrew a wide open receiver and then the next play he took way too long on his reads and got sacked (to be fair, Moton also missed a key block that would've allowed for more time).
On our second drive, we killed ourselves with a couple of key drops (Henry on a screen, and Braverman also on a screen). Then we had a false start on the next play.
I didn't mind the offensive play-calling. I thought it was fine. We just looked like a young team intimidated by a big-time college football environment. Once we settled in, I thought we played them pretty evenly for the most part. Our run defense wasn't good, but we were completely over-matched physically.
Also, I've decided that Boyden is overrated.
I'm anxious to see what we can do against Toledo on Saturday.
