I hope we cover the spread but I'm not holding my breath. It could very well get ugly, but hoping for the best. I'm more concerned about coming out of this without any more injuries.

VaTech doesn't look to me like the kind of team that is capable of blowing anyones doors off right out of the gate. They look pretty average in most respects but are well coached and always play hard. Hopefully our offense will be efficient enough to stay on the field, and their shaky QB play will continue. I think we'll need big plays on defense and special teams to win this one. But I look for it to be our best ever offensive performance against VaTech regardless.

I think it all comes down to how well our front 7 do against the VTech offense and how well our OL can do getting Franklin some room to run... I doubt we take many shots downfield unless we are REALLY struggling on offense...

Being able to actually run the ball on them would be huge. It keeps our already depth-challenged defense off of the field and takes more time off the clock. Shortens the game.
The last 3 times we played them, we've never been able to run the ball. I think the first couple we had Phillip Reed, and he couldn't go anywhere. I recall in the first meeting we kept sending Jeff Welsh out on a bunch of rollouts because the line couldn't give him much time at all. It was brutal to watch.

The thing with Franklin and our running game this year... is that we obviously have a MUCH IMPROVED run blocking offensive line... I think we need to give those big guys some props too.... It will be interesting to see how they do against VTech... and it doesn't hurt that VT lost one of their TOP defensive lineman for the game. That's huge too.

Not to be a buzzkill but if the O/U were set at 1 I might still take the under.

From a VaTech forum with the same thread topic of the Q&A:
Quote:Clearly we should win this game but WMU isn't the joke that they have been. Their freshman RB is big, fast, and legit. Honestly, I can see them having success funning the football--especially with Big Lu out. If so, and if our O struggles--which it does more often than not-- I can see them controlling the clock a little and keeping this game closer than most Hokies expect.

Consider too that they are in full on meltdown over there after back to back heartbreakers.

And on this VaTech site -- holy cow. Their fans in the comment section are mostly DEPRESSED. I sound like a VaTech fan compared to them! They'd be yelling at DB for being so against WMU! :)

Quote:It’s hard not to get at least a little bit of a sinking feeling here. Up and coming team, on the road, young coach, smells vulnerability. Of course VT has the horses to win (and win comfortably), but once that ball is in the air and any demons we haven’t overcome rear their heads….who knows. This is the kind of team VT could lose to but then beat turn around and beat UNC the next week. It almost feels like it’s going down that path. I’ll predict WMU 31, VT 27.
Quote:Realistically, VT 27 – WM 20.
This will be the first time in 4 tries that WM scores, but that’s not a bad thing as long as we can scrap together a win. We don’t have the smothering defense of the 2000-2004 era, it would be foolish to think we can shut them down 4 times in a row.

RE: Q and A with DDrew - VTech edition
I'm interested to see what happens if WMU does get blown out a little. How will you all react? And how will the team react?
To me, this game sets up badly for WMU, not because of matchups necessarily, but because of the mentality that VT is going to have going into this game. They CANT lose, so they are going to be prepared. Usually, when an upset of this magnitude is pulled off, it is partially attributed to one team taking the other lightly. I don't think Beamer and staff is going to let that happen.
I hope that a loss doesn't have everyone crying about a crappy coaching staff, and we suck, and blah blah blah....
If you are paying attention to Coach Fleck right now, he has downplayed the 2-1 start for a reason...
