Thread for serious discussion of App State @ Georgia Southern
No goats or gnats or incest or bestiality jokes here please.

My take on the matchup...

App looks like they have found the QB they have needed (IMO) since they have become more of a passing spread team instead of a spread running/option team. Lamb looks good but still looks like a freshman. This could be problematic in this game.

On defense we've been doing this weird thing where a linebacker or sometimes a safety attacks the LoS as if he is a defensive lineman or something and sometimes a player actually breaks through the offensive line. This results in the opposing QB either getting tackled before he can throw the ball or results in the QB having to run to avoid getting tackled. We will need to do this against App tomorrow.

On the other hand, even though App doesn't seem to have receivers to match up with the Washington/Peacock tandem of last year I worry about us giving up big YAC on short passing plays. We absolutely have to tackle in the open field when the receiver is in reach.

On offense I think we move the ball and the number of points we score will be determined by how many mistakes we make.

GS. Keys to the game. Pressure on the qb. No turnovers. Do not take our foot off the gas.

App is a better team than most on this board think they are, they are just very young. The defense has been exceptional, but subject to the occasional inexperienced lapses, like USM's last touchdown.

They are also more run-oriented than you might think, and App has have two very solid RB's that will keep the pressure off the QB. I personally will be looking for wrinkles in App's goal line offense based on the experience last week as well.

Kicking game was fine until last weekend. It can only be traced to the loss of our holder QB#3 Hallock due to injury. Zack will have to get last week out of his head and get his timing back... but quite frankly, touchdowns will be needed not field goals.

Having said all that: This game could be a low-scoring affair. The App defense will be ready, and the offense may sputter... keeping our production and GS's in check. The winning team could have less than 30 points scored.

In the considerations category: I think this short week could actually help AppState... especially the way the game ended vs. Southern Miss. The guys are always motivated to play GS, and want to erase the mistakes from last week... I think AppState will be ready to play. That's my two cents.

FOR GS

On offense:

Avoid the big, enormous, back breaking, momentum killing mf'ing turnovers

Defense:

Being able to get to the QB early and often and don't let a busted play turn into a 80 TD giving them inspiration

Should be a great game to showcase the Sun Belt on TV. I look forward to an expected sellout crowd, intense rivaley, and competitive match.

I hope the UL game at TXST is the same way. I know it would have been a huge crowd if it was a Saturday but sounds like many won't make it for a Tuesday game. But the build up to the UL game was fun last year with plenty of banter between the schools admins and fans. I hope this continous this year cause its fun to watch the hype between GS and App St.

RE: Thread for serious discussion of App State @ Georgia Southern
I'm still not convinced our defense is up to FBS standards. Our interior line has played well but our secondary has been susceptible to the big play and, quite frankly, we don't tackle very well. Ga Southern is a much more diversified offense than in the past and I think that will cause immense problems for our defense as it has for the four previous foes for Southern.

I do believe Lamb is better suited for our offense than Bryant if for no other reason than his mobility. He has been able to break a long run in the last two games. Bryant really doesn't have that ability since his injury in 2012. Cox and Upshaw will have to produce on the ground or it will be a long night for the Apps in Statesboro. This team also lacks a big play threat. There are no Brian Quick or Sean Price type players who can break the big one. We are extremely young but I think as the season progresses we will begin to see this team put together some more consistent performances. However, I would not be surprised to see a reversal of the game last year in Boone with Ga Southern winning by 3-4 scores.

If Appalachee has any receivers capable of running a post route at a reasonable pace, then they have a big play threat in this game. Georgia Southern's defense bites on the pump fake way too often and leaves receivers wide open. As long as your receivers don't have hula hoops for hands like South Alabama, there's potential for big plays at the receiver position.

RE: Thread for serious discussion of App State @ Georgia Southern
To me this game comes down to 1 big question: Can Georgia Southern get pressure on the App quarterback? Last year in Boone we couldn't and App carved up our pass defense (or lack thereof). What has hurt us bigtime vs. App in the last few years is our inability to get pressure on the quarterback.

I believe we will be able to score some points which we usually do vs. App. We need to be able to stop or at least slow App down to win the game.

I more concerned about App's running game. If we force them to throw the ball and we can hang on to the ball during our possessions, I think we'll be fine.

RE: Thread for serious discussion of App State @ Georgia Southern
After seeing the first three games we are better than the end of last season. On offense I supported Kam as the starter. Inside that locker room you have to let the incumbent starter lose the job. Taylor played well at Michigan, equally as well during Campbell and obviously in the eye of the coaches passed Kam in practice. I was surprised Kam got zero snaps in the USM game. Taylor took the job with his performance at USM. He has a feel for the game and an awareness of what's going on around him. The team just seems to operate more smoothly around him and he can make plays with his legs that Kam can not (probably still some lingering effects of that knee surgery). I suppose there is something to the fact Taylor was a highly recruited FBS QB, while Kam was a lightly recruited FCS QB.

I was somewhat puzzled by the staff starting Upshaw last week. He runs hard and looked good at Michigan, but you don't sit the guy who set all freshman school records and was third in the voting for national FCS freshman of the year. Every time Marcus was in the So Miss game we moved the ball. Marcus is back in the starting spot this week. I hope the staff learned a valuable lesson there. Our WR's aren't going to light people up with big plays. As a group they are a gritty, sure handed bunch that can block and make tough catches. Sims McElfresh is money in the bank. One look at that Michigan catch tells you all you need to know about him. Malachi Jones was presumed to be the "star" of the group, but struggled a bit the first two weeks then played well at USM. Tacoi Sumler is 4 star recruit transfer from Oregon. The guy has battled injuries ever since he got to Boone. He ran a 10.49 100 meter in high school senior, which was the quickest time in the nation. He is healthy now and a big time deep threat.

Scott continues to deal with Jerry Moore's lack of recruiting offensive linemen his last three years. A RS freshman beat out a returning jr starter at guard, a walk-on beat out a returning sr starter at center and we have a sr walk on (5-11 270) starting at right guard. The right guard situation is because of an injury to a soph who was starting at the end of last season, but the fact remains there are no quality scholarship back-ups there. Scott has chosen to redshirt OL recruits for the long run in FBS, can't fault him for that. Once we eliminate stupid mistakes, no concentration penalties like false starts in key situations, I believe we will be fine. This offense can move the ball on a lot of people and score a lot of points. Scott opened up the playbook a bit more in the second half and attacked the seams and middle of the USM secondary. They couldn't stop it.

Most rational App fans knew there would be a learning curve with the new 3-4 alignment. Other than a few busted assignments which led to big runs, the guys played well at Michigan. Forget the Campbell game. USM isn't a dynamic offensive rushing team, but they are an FBS program with FBS players. Holding them to 61 total yards rushing (31 on the opening drive) including -7 in the 3rd qtr and 14 total in 2nd half, is impressive. I know that won't be the case this week, but it shows the guys seem to be grasping the scheme. We are still a bit weak at one DE spot and very young overall with 12 soph's or true freshmen in the 2 deep and only starting 2 Sr & 2 Jr.

Special teams are pretty good. Bentley might be the best punter in the league as a soph. Not only can he boom it, but he is outstanding at dropping the ball inside the ten. Reminds me of Ray Guy kicking for the coffin corner. Zack will be fine kicking the ball. Until last week he hadn't missed a kick. It happens. Bethard won't run away from anyone returning punts, but he has great hands. Lewis is a burner returning KO's, but being a true freshman has made some poor decisions. Can't wait to see him get loose against the grain.

I have low expectations for my Apps this weekend. Maybe I'm sandbagging a bit, but man it's tough to see how we turn around with a short week after such a painful loss. App is definitely down, and GS knows what we're going through. It's magnified for App due to the upgrade in competition. Here's to hoping for a typical GS/App State slugfest with the typical App State victory result.

I think of you look at USM's yards after catch, we fared very well, despite some serious size advantages USM had. We all knew the secondary would be a challenge for us this year, but the defense overall has improved each game.

App will need to win the turnover battle by two to keep this one close and our kicker must get his confidence back.

GS will come out hot, the first 2-3 drives are going to set the tone for the whole game, hope we are ready.

Saint, I don't think you are giving our defense and our coaches enough credit. GSU is not an unknown quantity to us. We have been playing them for years. So has Nate Woody. App beat them last year, and GS's personnel is much the same. The triple option is not a novelty to us.. We used to see it twice a year.

I didn't think they ran the triple option the same under the new staff. This teams passes much more efficiently and effectively. It is more than just stopping the run.

I agree Hap. We are not familiar with the current version based upon what I saw vs GT.

There defense is also improved over last year and do bring an extra playing to pressure the QB.

We do have half a dozen players that chose App over GS the last couple years that are certainly looking forward to this game.

I agree GS can pass better, but it's still only a little over 100 yards a game. It's a consideration and they may burn us, but you still stop the run to stop southern.
