RE: 4 AAC schools had over 40k in the stands this weekend
there was no ticket deal. it was a legit crowd (btw, the stadium capacity was reduced to just under 59,000 after the last ada renovations. im not sure how many seats are removed by the endzone tarp underneath the large video board, maybe a 1000 so capacity for tiger games right now is somewhere in the 57,000 range. i was on tiger lane 8 hours before kickoff and ive never seen people looking for extra tickets and finding none. i think thats why so many people got hung up at the ticket booths before kick-off, they had always been able to find tickets floating around outside the stadium and this time there just werent any. when tiger football has a pulse, people respond. i was really suprised at how few people mtsu brought - smallest batch they've ever brought.

this line was double and stretched past the fountain & was taken 30 minutes before the game. the ticket booths by the gates also had long lines at them.

i think so, not smacking. the weather was good and their is a lot of enthusiasim. there may have also been an enexpensive ticket deal too. i am sure middle brought at least a couple thousand, possibly as many as 3000.

i wanna say our worst attendance at the darkest hour was something like 4100 in the rain a few years ago.

i was at all of the liberty bowl games that were in the 65,000 plus before the seating was redone and reduced into 57,0000 something but they involved an SEC team like utk or miss. i think this was the 8th highest attendance for a non sec team.

we can put the fans 20000 in when we are average. Abover average we break the high to mid 30's . Good teams we start hitting the forties. big inconference teams we should hit 50 if we are winning. utk and miss will be hard sellouts 57 +.

a lot of memphis fans have watched a lot of bad football over the years, but they keep coming.

Middle TN brought maybe 500 people

I would have thought based on that picture that it would be closer to 50k but I guess the shape of the stadium makes it hard to tell. Either way, great job for Memphis and its fans!

So do we, but I wouldn't hold my breath. We opened as 24 point dogs, and they are better and deeper than us practically everywhere.

We can win, but it will be a huge upset. They seem much better than UCLA, by the eye test. Guess we'll find out Saturday night. :)

So I'm guessing by those pictures of the lines for tickets, were these a lot of walk-ups? What do you think brought them all out? Just seems like a pretty drastic jump for MTSU.

Don't know about walkups for sure, but you could certainly assume that. I saw someone else post that our admin was planning on about 32K. There weren't any free or cheap seats being handed out, so part of the issue was handling the larger unexpected crowd.

I think what happened has absolutely nothing to do with MTSU, which borught only a few hundred fans, and everything to do with Memphis being hungry for a football winner.

There was some skepticism before the season started, due to us getting manhandled by Temple and UConn at the end of last season.

But we absolutely steamrolled AP, 63-0, then held our own with UCLA on the road, and that apparently was enough to generate the excitement.

Memphis has a hard core football fan base of about 15-20K, give or take, but we have a huge casual fan base that will show up if we even hint at being good. That's the result of being in a big city (an advantage), and having a lot of competition for entertainment dollars (a disadvantage).

If we become consistently good, we'll average mid '40s, at worst, and probably fill the joint up for good games. Heck, we were averaging 44K just a few years ago, when Wimprine and DeAngelo Williams were around, and we were winning 8 or 9 games a year.

We've never won any kind of football title, and haven't had an undefeated season since 1963. Can you imagine what will happen if we become as successful as ECU or Cincy? 59K won't hold us any more.

We have long been a sleeping giant. We were just so horrible the last few years that most fans outside Memphis didn't realize it. Let's hope we can keep it up. The next 3 are tough: @ Ole Miss, @ Cincy, and home to Houston.

If we can win 2 of those (or maybe even one and be competitive in the others), the sky is the limit. After that, our last 6 games are against more or less the bottom 6 in the league.

Yeah, all of us Tiger fans know that, but I forget this audience doesn't.

Reminds me of this study.

Quote:In second place, we have the Memphis Tigers. Memphis is fairly similar to SMU in that they have very solid support (30K+ attendance) for a team that has been average on the field. It is these two programs that tell us that the AAC may have a chance to remain a major conference. We suspect that if SMU and Memphis become on-field successes their fans will be highly supportive.

There was a ticket deal...$7 tickets on living social (instead of the normal 10)

I posted the link on the MTSU message board to be nice.

That wasn't a school deal and to be honest - I've never heard of that outfit. Maybe a loss leader to drive traffic

Thats pretty awesome. Is that the new scoreboard that was recently installed?

Just goes to show that a bit of winning and a strong team will put fans in the stadium. We get thread after thread grousing about USF attendance. Well Duh, the team sux... it has nothing to do with playing in the Bucs stadium.

If we beat Ole Miss, even if we lose to Cincy, that stadium will explode for the Houston game--upwards of 55,000 I would guesstimate.
