Week 4 Power Rankings
If the Arkansas State/Louisiana Monroe winner in two weeks goes on a conference run, I get a feeling we're going to be arguing about whose #1 for a while.

1. Georgia Southern: There is only one argument here. The Eagles walked into Mobile and absolutely obliterated South Alabama. No SBC team had managed that to this point. Arkansas State is the only team with a track record of success in that place, and its a bowl track record.

2. Arkansas State: In the end, Utah State is likely a 7 to 8 win team out of the MWC. Probably one of the top three teams in that league. This is a good win for the league and for the Red Wolves, regardless how inept the offense looked at times. Remember that Utah State shut down Jordan Lynch and NIU last year in a bowl, and returned most of those starters.

3. Louisiana Monroe: Yet another week where a team gets a bye and looks good for it. Warhawks results are confusing to figure out. Wake is terrible, yet they shut down ULM's offense. Idaho opened up some question marks on defense. However, they are 2-1 and play Troy next week (Which means 3-1) Gigantic league showdown in Jonesboro in two weeks.

4. Texas State: Officially I am going to fault the thunderstorm for beating the Bobcats. Defense just couldn't hold on late and the offense went quiet at the wrong point. Still, a good run for the Bobcats that should put them in good position heading into league play.

5. New Mexico State: Why Not? Has anyone else really deserved this spot? Lafayette has looked like crap for three straight weeks. South has 2 touchdowns in their last 11 offensive quarters. App still has work to do, and don't get me started on GSU, Idaho, and Troy.

6. South Alabama: I am putting the Jags here because of their defense alone. That is a decent defense down in Mobile, and it should win them a few league games. However, I'm not sure what we're going to get out of the Jags offense.

7. Louisiana Lafayette: Apologies to Cajun Fans...but I'm not staying up to watch the remainder of the Boise Bloodbath. Where to begin? Special Teams is leaking, Defense has more holes than a WW1 battlefield, and Terrance Broadway looks nothing like Terrance Broadway. Whatever is going on in Lafayette, they've got a couple weeks to figure it out before league play starts.

8. Appalachian State: Apps fought hard at USM tonight, but you can tell this is a flawed team that still is dealing with the transition to the FBS level. Still, I think they'll be better as the year goes on.

9. Georgia State: I'd love to be a fly on the wall in the Washington Locker Room at halftime today. What happened? Did the Huskies attempt to sleep walk through it, did Georgia State borrow the Seahawks defense? Because the 2nd half looked nothing like the 1st.

10. Idaho: Idaho will surprise someone in the SBC this year. But this is probably a 3 win team max. Too much work to do, and lots of adjustments to be made.

1,111 Troy: Troy is so bad they are not even the 11th best team in the SBC. This might be the worst team in college football this year for the FBS level. That is frightening. Blakeney needs to be put to pasture.

I can't agree with this based on one win...if we beat App Thursday...and then take care of business on the road against NMSU...maybe.

I'm proud of the way our team has played but it's a long season.

The Question was honestly asked on the AState board tonight. Is there anyone in the league that can beat Georgia Southern if they play like this? Obviously App is a crazy rivalry, and Texas State in San Marcos down the road wont be easy, but get by that, and we're talking about a fairly manageable league slate before ULM comes to Statesboro after Thanksgiving.

Not looking forward to the TXST game, especially after how poor we played in the second half. We should count our blessings that at least USA was sloppy too. GATA!

Weird because we played our worst game of the year tonight. But, that is encouraging. Offensive playcalling was shoddy. Defense was fantastic.

Have to agree with skins on this one. Ruse called great games the first 3 weeks. I couldn't understand running the speed option on 3rd and short almost everytime when Brieda was gashing them up the middle.

We were flat and were fortunate that USA was a little flatter. We played hard and physical, and that alone will win games when both teams aren't at their best.

It helps to have a capable D. We aren't used to that very often.

A lot of football to play so I don't want to get ahead of myself, but what is the logic behind a transitional team not being bowl eligible? We certainly do not have any advantage that would make a bowl ban logical. IF we were to win the conference, I'm sure the bowls and SBC office would like their conference represented by the champion.

Anyway, a lot of football to play and a lot can change from early to late in the season.

As you said, it's much too early to be thinking about that now, but IF we were fortunate enough to win the conference we could apply to the NCAA for a waiver.

If, and it's a very big if, GS runs the table GS should be exempt from this and considered for a Bowl game. GS didn't load up on transfers last year and GS is playing with a legit FCS team this year. I would understand if GS loaded up on D-1 transfers last year like Marshall did. However, GS didn't. So, that means GS was kept out of the 1-aa playoffs last year and a bowl game this year. I read where someone posted the NCAA rules and they can allow a team in transition to play in a Bowl game. So, I guess there's a chance if GS runs the table.

Some of you thinking GS will steamroll need to look at sbc threads from last season about this time. It's way too early to declare anything.

Not sure I agree that GSU obliterated USA. That score is a little misleading as to how the game played out. I hate to admit this but USA kinda beat their self at times.

There is for transition teams, but a lot must usually happen first, each list is exhausted first and then go down to the next level if no more teams are eligible.

  1. Teams finishing 6-6 with one win against a team from the lower Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).
  2. 6-6 teams with two wins over FCS schools.
  3. Teams that finish 6-7 with loss number seven in their conference championship game (that has been eliminated by the conference championship waiver rule).
  4. 6-7 teams that normally play a 13-team schedule, such as Hawaii's home opponents. Although Hawaii normally plays a 13-game schedule, it only played 12 games this season.
  5. FCS teams who are in the final year of the two-year FBS transition process, if they have at least a 6-6 record.
  6. Finally, 5-7 teams that have a top-5 Academic Progress Rate (APR) score. This was later adjusted to allow other 5-7 teams to be selected thereafter—in order of their APR.

Flipped USA and ULL. Don't think this will be the final standings, but a good power ranking for right now.

If we don't get hit by the injury bug more than we already have (can already tell the blocking is suffering without Nardo), I think we go 8-0 in conference. App and Texas State are the biggest challenges we have left. I just don't see us losing to ULM at home if the conference title is on the line...it would be like a one game playoff for the championship... We normally do pretty good in those.
