Miami's program is 20th in all time winning % in FBS with a record of 668-422-44, Marshall is 91st with a record of 410-449-43, good enough for 11th in the MAC. Miami is no Furman.
As for more recent success Miami has won a conference championship and has finished a season ranked in the top 10 more recently than Marshall. Currently Miami is in a down cycle and Marshall had a winning season last year for the 3rd time in the last decade, congratulations. But suggesting that Marshall as a program has now passed Miami for good is a bit silly.
But please don't ever change Herd fans, your crazy combination of paranoid insecurity mixed with wildly un-selfaware bravado is always entertaining. Cheers!
Washington and Jefferson played in the Rose Bowl once, and the University of Chicago played football in the Big 10. Whatever your tradition, it's gone, it does you no good. The MAC degenerated into the MAC of the 1990s when Marshall left, meanwhile I think that Marshall has surpassed you, whether that is permanent who knows, maybe Chicago will be back in the B1G someday.
I see what you're saying, since leaving the MAC Marshall is 50-61 with 3 winning seasons in 9 years, its hard to compete with that. Meanwhile you've got to go all the way back to 2012 to find the last time the MAC had 4 teams ranked in the same season and a team in a BCS Bowl. But since then the MAC has fallen off big time, no doubt.
The MAC is having a down year and Marshall is having a good year, it happens. Try not to overthink and enjoy it, you won't always have a 4 yr starter at QB.
Tettleton was the same way. 4 year QB's get it done for the most part.
And you said over on the MAC board that you never come over here and talk smack.
Nope, he never does.
Let's review. Marshall is not a cultural fit. I believe this very poster made the implication we are barely literate coal miners living in the small backwater of Huntington, WV. While I will admit, Huntington is no metropolis, it's metro population of over 300,000 eclipses the population of 64,000 strong Athens County. To claim either is without Appalachian culture is disingenuous; however, Athens, being a small town in Southern Ohio, tends to have more of this influence. Huntington is the hub of the region, even providing the local broadcast news for Athens which sits an hour and some change driving distance away.
Historically, Marshall was a basketball school. After the tragedy of 1970, the university became dedicated to changing the perception of its football program. Almost any school that played Marshall during those years will hold a winning record. Our program was decimated. It took 14 years to achieve a winning season. Although the scoreboard may not record it, we were winners.
Cato is a great QB. There is no denying his talent; however, he is one player on a team. Marshall has consistently had some of the highest ranked recruiting classes in the G5 for the past few years. Unlike some schools, we will not tank from losing one player. Remember when Chad Pennington graduated and Byron Leftwich became our QB, we don't live for mediocrity. Like all programs, we have down years, but our fan base is not apathetic enough to let a consistent six or seven win coach stay into retirement. Again, this is not consistent with MAC philosophy.
Finally, you are right. We never dominated the MAC. I am so ashamed that in six years we only won the conference championship five times. We won the East all six, but our undefeated season, number 10 ranking, most winning program of the 90's are all moot. That one year we lost is devastating. Marshall elevated the MAC game, and it is hard to deny you improved trying to keep up with Marshall.
Regardless of wins, Marshall is not a fit for the MAC. There is nothing wrong with being comfortable with your associations and performance, but it is not who we are. Our fans expect improvement, and the program has ambition. We attend games and travel well. We cheer, and we have pride in our team. This is not the MAC culture. In a nutshell, the relationship is over. It's not you; it's us.
You are 1000% correct. Great post. Lets also not forget that the majority of our Alumni reside in WV, North Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, Florida....you see where I'm coming from? CUSA has a a presence in all of those states. That's very important for exposure reasons and recruiting.
I will say this about Akron...
Akron...you need to get out and support the team. You have a good coaching staff and have the BEST facilities in the Mac. The upside you guys have is through the roof. I enjoyed my trip to Akron and the fans were great. I hope we continue to schedule Akron. I would support Akron in the future as a potential CUSA add if the fan support improved. Everything else is in place.
For those of you that have never been to Akron and seen their athletic facilities, they are fantastic. I think this would be a nice setup for ODU.
