Quote:Hack's point about UT-Mizzou attendance is valid. Although UT did beat the Bearcats and Navy at home and has taken care of BG for a while now, over the past several years UT still hasn't been winning enough of the marquee games to grab the interest of the band wagon folks. However, regardless of the excuses, the fact remains that UT did NOT sell out for a home game with a visiting ranked SEC team and that is embarrassing. Unfortunately I suspect that there will not be very many such marquee games in the future once those already scheduled are played because I think the Big Boys are tired of playing the G5 and just as the MAC frowns on way games at FCS schools, I suspect there are not going to be a many power conference schools scheduling any future road games against the G5.
Sadly, I think you are right.
But, as the money grab escalates in coming years, I wonder whether the P5 will begin to turn on itself. There are a good number of programs in those conferences that, year-in and year-out, do not "compete for a national championship." Heck, I can think of three Big Ten schools right off the top of my head. So, I wonder if, in the not too distant future, the P5 will want to be shedding some of those programs and consolidating the POWER and the MONEY even more. This would lead to more conference realignments and maybe some, new, stronger regional conferences than, say, the MAC.
This might not be so bad. OK, yes, it is bad--it is bad now, but what are you going to do about it? I remember when I was a kid watching a "stock car" (NASCAR) race with my dad and commenting on the race for the lead. My dad said, "That isn't the only race going on. Look at the race for 5th place, the race for 8th place, etc." That gave me a whole new perspective on stock car racing.
So, the Big Money conferences want to form an exclusive club--THE race for the lead. Fine. Let 'em, and screw 'em. I won't watch them on TV. I will not visit their stadiums. I will not discuss them publicly. I will go out of my way to sidestep anything to do with them. If they will not deal fairly and equitably with our non-P5 program I really don't give 5
's about them. They are not the only race on the track.
And, furthermore, to hell with "TV" athletics. There is nothing like being a part of a live event, and that includes athletics.
This evening 13ABC had a report on something called the "Lucas County Health Assessment" which revealed that 70% of people in Lucas County fall into the area of being obese or overweight. So, Lucas County football fans, do your heart a favor and turn off the TV, get off your butt and get out and support your local team!
