And I lost count of the "flag on the play," only to be followed with official announcing "there was no flag on the play." Did one of the officials have turrets and kept throwing a flag?

after review it was the right call. Still piss poor officiating.

Is it normal to announce injury timeouts over the loudspeakers now? I didn't notice that until yesterday.

Absolutely. The officiating was awful. The early whistle was awful. Admitting it was about the only thing they got right all day.

I heard it and I noticed that the field judge, who blew the whistle, was standing directly behind JJ within 5-7 yards. Just from memory, my impression wasn't that the whistle was blown before JJ's attempted catch, but as if the back judge assumed JJ made the fair catch (so roughly at the same time the ball arrived). It does suck for AA&M, but once an inadvertent whistle blows there's nothing to be done. The guy will likely be fined or suspended for a mistake that bad.

In my undergrad days, I was asked to stick around after my frat's game to be an extra back judge - I reffed games on off nights - for Pi Kapp vs Delta Sig (big game every season back then that typically decided the Greek champion). I blew an inadvertent that cost Delta Sig a huge play and it suuuuuucks! Everyone knows who blew it - literally and figuratively. There's no hiding and no excuse.

Yea it was the right call. The mistake was the whistle. Unfortunate for them. Like I said the officiating was one of the worst I have ever seen. I hope we never see that crew again.

They are officially, "Official's time-out."

Inadvertent whistle or not, I thought when the play happened that JJ was not given the opportunity to catch the ball. The defender arrived as the ball did.
