RE: MACk talks MAC sports- With WMU athletics beatwriter
This week in Bronco Football WMU beatwriter Julie Mack talks more Bronco football. Here's a teaser of what you'll find.

Whey protein abuse a cause for concern at WMU
In a recent investigative report, this reporter found that WMU football players were taking large doses of Whey protein in an effort to build muscle. We confronted the WMU Strength and Conditioning Coach.

When asked if Whey Protein was being abused by WMU players, the coach stated. "They drink about 3 table spoons a day mixed with delicious "chocolate milk." When asked if this was similar to the Whey used by Little Miss Muffet when she sat on her tuffit eating her curds and whey," he responded. "No, she was actually eating cottage cheese, totally different."

The coach refused to answer further questions, claiming he had stuff to do. We at Mlive feel that there is a nutritional cover up being perpetrated in the WMU athletic department, and will be looking into this further.

Is WMU Football guilty of slaughtering Pigs

According to records supplied to us by the WMU Equipment Manager, WMU purchased over 60 balls this year alone. These footballs, are also referred to as "pig skins," and we wondered if this was an ethical treatment of pigs. When confronted on the use of pigs skin at WMU, Equipment Manager Lotsa Helmetz told Mlive, "I don't know if they're made from pigs, cows, or synthetics. What are your shoes and purse made of?" In an obvious attempt to deflect Helmetz walked away in a clear admission of wrong doing.

On Tuesday 3 protestors showed up at Waldo Stadium in an outpouring of support for pigs.

Julie Mack reviews the Western Michigan, Idaho football match

Broncos show good sportsmanship in loss to Idaho
Mlive covered this football match via Skype. We later found out that it was available on ESPN3, but we got what we could.

In the first quarter the Vandals scored a lot of points. Coach Fleck was seen chest bumping, fist pumping, and cheering the team on. Several WMU players helped each other off the ground and in a jester of sportsmanship, they often helped opponents up as well.

Andrew Haldeman finished the first quarter with a missed field goal, but it was evident that he had tried very hard. His teammates patted him on the back in spite of missing the 3 pointer.

In the second quarter, the Vandals scored more points. The Broncos appeared tired from the long bus ride to Idaho. It was rumored that the team ate the night before at Baked Potato City. Mlive food editor Gabby Cheesewhiz will have a review later.

My friend and I went to Starbucks for a half calf mocha latte during the third quarter but got back in time to see the players graciously shaking hands after the game. I don't know what the final score was but if you tune in to ESPN.com you can find the score. Most pleasing for this reporter was that no one got hurt, and everyone got along.

However, this reporter was a bit disturbed when the Vandals set off fireworks at the end of the game inside of an indoor arena. Mlive has contacted the Oshtemo fire chief to get his take on this dangerous situation. He has yet to return our call.

Check out tomorrows Bronco Sports update, when we investigate the dangers of fireworks at sporting events.

We give our grades on yesterdays performance

Mack Grades the Broncos
Today was ECCU Education Day at Waldo Stadium. While the Broncos played well and ended up pulling out a win over the Eastern Michigan Eagles, this reporter was highly disappointed in the "Day" itself.

If this day was supposed to be about education, frankly I failed to see it. Most of the Education Day set up consisted of bouncy houses and sign ups for free bank account deposits. It seemed like little more than a PR plug of ECCU and had little to do with education. After the game I talked with head coach PJ Fleck, and asked him what he thought of the Education Day set up. Fleck responded that he was busy coaching football and really hadn't had time to check it out.

We interpreted this as a clear dodge of our question, and pressed further. When asked if he thought Education Day was targeted at the more affluent rather than reaching out to the homeless in Kalamazoo, Fleck seemed dumb founded, and hesitant to answer. He kept lamenting that he thought this interview was about football, and I was having none of that.

From this reporters perspective Education Day was a huge failure. Sure the Bronco football team won, but a lot of kids lost---getting no educational value from this experience what so ever.

Grading the Broncos
Offense- D+ I found the bouncy houses highly offensive
Defense- B In defense of Fleck, his team did win on the field
Special Teams D I was looking for something special out of Education Day and I did't get it.

Coaching F When asked about Education Day Coach Fleck seemed oblivious.

Some of the kids should read a couple of these numbers at next springs Forensics competition. This is actually some professional quality comic satire.

Nice work.

dip it's separate shipping and handling, cause ya know shipping minions can't be bothered to put things in appropriate size boxes let alone pack everything going to one address in the same box. Maybe Mrs. Mack should do some investigating about that, they are probably minimum wage high schoolers being taken advantage of by the big corporation.

RE: MACk talks MAC sports- With WMU athletics beatwriter
This week in Bronco Football WMU beatwriter Julie Mack talks more Bronco football. Here's a teaser of what you'll find.

Were Oshtemo Police profiling WMU football players
In light of the recent arrest of two African American football players at WMU this reporter is wondering, "Were these young men being profiled?" Let's look back on what happened.

These young men were simply shopping at a local supercenter. Their cart was filled with groceries, which just happened to be 15 bottles of high end liquor. Clearly, these two "Gentle Giants" were simply shopping. If they were white athletes with a cart full of beverages, would they be getting followed by store security? Is shopping for something that helps you stay hydrated now considered a suspicious crime? My cart is often filled with multiple cases of Pierre, Starbuck Frappe's, and Snapple Rasberry Tea---- but nobody ever stops me.

With that in mind, could this be a case of "driving a shopping cart while black!"

We contacted the local NAACP and asked them if they thought this was a case of profiling and received this disturbing response. "Probably just college kids trying to get some hootch for a house party." This was followed by a brief chuckle----quite unnerving to this reporter. Clearly he didn't see the racial implications that I saw. I wondered, is the NAACP in cahoots with Walmart and the Oshtemo Police Department.?

Mlive has placed several calls into Operation Push, Al Sharpton, and the national headquarters of the NAACP. They have yet to return our call. We also alerted our friends at WWMT, where Andy Pepper responded, "Is this a prank call?" This reporter never jokes about racism Andy. More on this as things develop.

ChipDip, this is great stuff, you are right on with Miss Liberal's reporting in MLive.

I got into a email battle last winter when she accused the Kazoo Police of making to many arrests for "drug use" in the north side of town.
She called herself a the community "watch dog"! My point was anybody who uses illegal drugs "should" be arrested no matter what race.

I can't wait for that paper to disappear entirely, then she will be out of work!

I don't wish anyone to be out of a job either, but I do hope the demise of the Mlive Kalamazoo Gazette is sooner rather than later. Something will replace it and hopefully it will be an upgrade.

Mack is no watchdog. She advocates rather than reports. There are some things I know about her in relation to her education reporting that go beyond reporting and are basically personal vendettas. For libel reasons I won't state them publicly.

Don't get me wrong I am NO fan of Julie Mack and her liberal "reporting". I also agree with you regarding just how bad the MLive model is.

But I have a serious question. You say you wish for the demise of MLive and the Kalamazoo Gazette. And that something else would take it's place. Do you REALLY believe that? This is where I disagree. Once the Gazette or MLives attempt at Kazoo coverage is gone, I simply don't see anything taking it's place.

As it is right now 90% of any news is online. That isn't going to change and ultimately will be the demise of the local newspaper. Never to return again. Not sure that this is ultimately a good thing.

Yeah, except you don't. Your problem here isn't your little internet message board games, it's your insistence on butting into every single conversation and starting a fight, even when you have no dog in the fight, or interest in the topic. We were having a little fun here and then you come along and hose it down with your usual buzz kill.
