RE: June Jones out at SMU
SMU has a lot of money earmarked for that job......$3 million a year I think. You would think Jones could have done better at SMU. Maybe the academic standards were too high?

The one good thing he did was getting the academic standards reduced

RE: June Jones out at SMU
their little run happened at the perfect time for them.
SMU should be in CUSA right there with Rice.
Amazing how timing is everything.
Had the Tigers bowl run been 2 years earlier we would have been in the Big East.
We had the worst timing for football success and failure for conference realignment.

That job isn't as bad as some of you think, IMO. If they land the right guy (Herman, Morris, Spavital, etc.) then watch out...they'll be the best team in the American. IF they get the right guy. They thought they had the right guy in June.

They had a pretty good bowl run didn't they?
Wasn't he in the running for another job and it got leaked so he stayed at SMU?

RE: June Jones out at SMU
He was all but hired at Arizona State when word was leaked and there was a revolt among the ASU alumni and boosters. He was forced back to SMU, relations between him and the fanbase went south in a hurry, and any momentum he had built up to that point evaporated quick. He went to four small bowls and won three - a massive improvement over all efforts since 1989.
June got some actual interest in the program, showed that it is possible to win at SMU, and showed that SMU will pay big for the right guy. That's legitimate progress. I just wish he could have admitted to 'personal issues' before the off-season and two games into the season had gone by.

I think that shows that if a coach wants to go, you gotta let him.

RE: June Jones out at SMU
Personally, I was fine with him going to ASU. We stole him from Hawaii, he was fair game for someone else. Fair's fair.
But ASU's fanbase didn't want him, and I believe the AD was eventually pushed out over it. After he came back to SMU he spent the next few years mailing it in. There have been multiple articles in the DMN over that past year or two about the COMPLETE lack of effort on the recruiting trail, the recruiting rankings reflected that, and now the on-the-field results are starting to reflect that.
So on the one hand, perception and expectations of the program have risen, and that's very much due to June. On the other hand, the actual team on the field this year is about back down to the level where it was when he first arrived. In the end, that's a mixed bag.

It wasn't the SMU boosters, it was the ASU boosters who revolted if I recall. They (the ASU boosters) didn't want Jones. So, when it got leaked, ASU reversed course, leaving Jones hanging and with the only option to return to an SMU program that he had just snubbed.

You can keep telling yourself that all you want. It won't make it true. When UL, UC and USF went to the BE there was NOTHING that could have been done to get Memphis an invitation. WE WERE NEVER IN CONSIDERATION. At that point in time before all the major shake ups the BE was still looking at geography in their selections. As long as there were valid team in the eastern time zone to add, Memphis was never going to be considered. Read the minutes of the meeting. The first move they made was to kick out Temple. After that the first school eliminated was the Tigers. We were never on their radar at that time. As it was the BE began inviting teams on the western part of the country and parts of Texas before we were considered. The BE then was looking anywhere for numbers to try and hold on to their AQ status.

Thank you for clarifying. I didn't pick up on what Nigel meant. Sorry for any confusion.

SMU's biggest mistake was taking him back. I knew it was going to go south in a hurry after that.
