Yeah, that's not gonna happen.
Dude just took an official visit to FGCU. He's obviously not enamored with going to a school just because of their name.
Don't underestimate the recruiting prowess of Joe Dooley. He was in the finals of Josh Howard, Darrius Songalia, and had David West Commited when he was here and signed the biggest recruits we've ever landed in Joyces, Barnes and Brown all in one year. The guy really is the real deal recruiting.
RE: To Ramen Tiger: Lebo lands 3rd best player in the State of North Carolina
Other schools that were recruiting him but hadn't offered. Cincy, Wichita St, VCU, and La Tech. These coaches usually have a pretty good eye for under the radar talent. If they had some interest that's seems to be a good start.
Says he's a high motor hustler type.
"On ESPNU, Kentrell came up with 22 rebounds to go along with 13 points for Team Loaded VA (ADIDAS SUPER 64). This occurred while he was also matched up with nationally ranked Jaylen Brown (5 star #2 best player in the 2015 class per 247)."
Not to shabby. In the highlights he has good size and length, is disruptive on on defense, gets to and finishes at the rim. Seems to have an outside shot good enough to keep teams honest. I think we did OK.
Clearly he got under the skin of PJ Harriston. You don't do that if you suck. He would have laughed at him instead of punched him if he was a joke of a player.

3. 6’5 Kentrell Barkley: One of the best motors in the country. Has enormous wingspan and can play/guard multiple positions. Stock is definitely on the rise and trending to the HM- level. Great young man/competitor. If I’m going to war, I want him in the foxhole with me.
They had him 97th nationally on their site as well and the rest of their rankings do not seem crazy or far fetched. Maybe they know something everyone else is asleep on.
13points and 22 rebounds against the #2 player in the class on ESPNU should have opened some eyes though.

ECU bragging about their no star at Rivals with offers from Appalachian St, Campbell, Charlotte, Middle Tenn. St., N.C. Central, N.C. Wilmington, and W. Kentucky. Classic.

I probably wouldn't have made the thread, but 13 points and 22 rebounds on ESPNU vs 5 star /#2 Jaylen Brown isn't trash. There is also at least one site out there that thinks this guys is one of the best recruits in the country, and 247 has him at 83 rating on their and their composite and a solid 3 star. Rivals gets $hittier and $hitter every year are one of the last to update unlike 247, i'm not really worried what they think of the guy.

I'm not saying Kentrell wasn't someone we wanted because I honestly don't know, but every time you get a commit doesn't necessarily mean you "beat" everyone on the offer list for that player. Maybe you guys did beat us for Kentrell, but every school doesn't give every offer equal priority.
There is a thread on your board from May 1st saying that you had offered at that point. You don't just offer fringe recruits like this pre AAU circut even. Pretty clear he was of at least some what high priority.
Quote:Anyway, congrats on the commit. I wonder where he'll transfer in a year or two? My money is on NC Central.
If he's going to the MEAC he probably doesn't really have the talent to help us so that's all good.
He had pretty decent offers for this point. Providence, WKU, MTSU, Kent State, UNCC, UNCW, App State, UNCG, NC Central
I was a bit meh at first until I saw his highlights. I think it's pretty clear had he stayed on the board longer a lot of BCS schools would have started offering.
As long as we are holding down these kind of guys over the rest of our state brethren I think we'll be in good shape. Beats losing these area guys to lower level area schools which hasn't happened in a while.
I agree and I actually meant to put the pot stir next to the transfer comment to show that I was being sarcastic.
Scout.com talked to more than 100 college coaches to get their take on who was the most underrated player they saw during their July travels.
.....The players that also received multiples votes were Dean Wade, Deng Adel, Brandon Ingram, Dillons Brooks, Dupree McBrayer, Jawun Evans, Jaylen Brown, Kenny Williams, Kentrell Barkley, KeVaughn Allen, Kyle Guy , Vance Jackson, Jeremy Hemsley and Jalen Brunson.

First of all no one is bragging. I pointed out to Ramen Tiger that Lebo recruits pretty well. Secondly, every year Lebo and his staff finds kids like this, but before they can sign with ECU there are usually schools like Wake Forest, VT, Georgia and other schools in the area usually come in and take them.
Another thing about basketball fans that bother me is that they focus too much on dumb stuff like stars, rather than on rather a kid can play. Cincinnati signed a 4*/5* player last year (Jermaine Lawrence) that ended up transferring to Manhattan. I don't even know if guys like Russ Smith or Sean Kirkpatrick had any stars, but they ended up being All Americans; whereas Joe Jackson didn't do that and he was 4*/5* kid. So the star crap is crap. The question is can the kid play; and the recruiting services and coaches say that Barkley is pretty good.
RE: To Ramen Tiger: Lebo lands 3rd best player in the State of North Carolina
Stars/Ratings are a lot more right than wrong in basketball. It's certainly not as bad as football for most of the players when they have 30 some games, prep schools, plus another AAU circuit vs other top comp, and 95% the players generally still don't need to be built in a weight room. It's not always right though. Maurice Kemp wasn't rated jack and he was 10 times the college player of many of the top recruits. Lebo's not had a bad eye for recruiting talent, he just has some baffling rotations.
This is stupid though. We don't recruit like Memphis with 16k fans and an NBA area. There are about 340 other schools that don't either. That's fine, we don't have to, to be successful though. The first step is cornering the market on the players in the region that Charlotte, Richmond, ODU, UNCW, G. Mason, and VCU(when they were still coming up) 10 years ago used to get and keep them here and we'll have teams that can compete for NCAA's/NIT's pretty often.

Given the conference you are in you better start recruiting some top 150 players.
