In 2000, stAte lost in double-overtime to NC State - 38-31. stAte led most of the game and defense just wore out, not to mention some questionable calls Sound familiar? You guys aren't new to it either, but every team in the SBC has battled and come up a little short on the road or just gotten completely screwed over in money games. We could start a 20 page thread on that alone!

I remember getting screwed in Texas when we recovered an on-side kick and had momentum to drive in for a tie or win. Later in the week the officials admitted the had blown the call. A lot of good that does when they take the game away from you.

Not much in there we didn't already know. Hearing a NCSU fan tell me that we have a pretty good team means nothing coming from them. Well yes, we have a better team.

Absolutely. In our case I wouldn't put the blame solely on the calls, but our own depth, which has been discussed already. This article is just a well written summary of our issues and hope for our future season. I'm not worried about the loss in a general sense

It's not at all uncommon for refs to blow a critical call in a way that favors the horns at DKR stadium. Ask some of the older UNT fans.

RE: Good explanation for the NC state loss
When USA was in its FCS transitional year in 2011 we got some egregiously bad calls in favor of NCSU. I'm not claiming we would have won, but those calls made it impossible to win. It killed drives and wiped points off the board and gave them points. The ACC suspended the refs after the game, but of course that didn't help us.

RE: Good explanation for the NC state loss
I wouldn't read too much into this game and what it might mean for the rest of your season. We had a very similar final minutes loss to Purdue to open the 2011 season and we went 2-10, you'll also have to deal with your depth disadvantage compounding with each week considering you'll be undermanned in every game the rest of the way apart from SSU and App.

I'm not saying you guys will or won't be better than advertised, I'd just be hesitant to try to declare this game some sort of barometer.

Have fun laying the wood to SSU and go take it to the Jackets, it would certainly appear you guys can give them a game, if you pull it off look forward to congratulatory drinks from Dawg fans anywhere you go out that night, that's how it went for us in 2012.

No doubt depth was an issue, BUT if we just stuck the ball in the endzone on average (2 of the 3 times) we win going away and the depth "problem" wouldn't have been an issue.

If we don't muff the snap on the goal line we win even with a field goal.

Actually it appeared that Brieda may have broken the plane on the previous play but no call from the official so no review. If he had extended on his way down, Eagles win.

RE: Good explanation for the NC state loss
We are the same team whether we win or lose, so I'm not really worried about our starters. It's the backups that makes me worry. Our first 11 on offense can play with just about anyone in this conference. Our first 7 on defense can play with just about anyone in this conference. Our defensive backfield and their backups will give us some issues. We aren't going to go from a mediocre pass defense to world beaters in one season, it's gonna take some time. We are going to beat a couple teams that we probably shouldn't, and lose to a couple of teams that we probably shouldn't. This will still be a great season to be an eagle though. And I feel sorry for Savannah State this week, this will be the biggest beating we put on them I believe.

Yep, it was that close.

It has to be put on the coach. You don't kick a FG on 4th and 2 when you have a gassed defense a TD still beats you. Pick up the first down and it's over. Even if you fail to pick up the first down, you lose by 4 or in OT instead of by 1. There's no difference. No reason to kick a FG, it does nothing.

Sure it does something. It only gives them one option...forces them to score a touchdown, period.
I would have gone for it myself, and Fritz said if he could do it over again he would too.

RE: Good explanation for the NC state loss
Was always the chance of getting the ball back and either running out the clock or kicking another FG to put GS up over one score also. Best thing about going for it was having them with such a long field to have to travel so late in the game. More chance of turnover, safety or them taking too much time.
Always tough to second guess after the game. In light of what you know we all become more knowledgeable. Fritz sounds like he at least may take this game into account next time the same situation comes up, and it may very well happen.

Football games last for 60 minutes. Woulda, coulda, shoulda is what losers say after they lose. Players have an opportunity to execute on every play. These type of games will continue for Ga Southern over the next couple of years until we can recruit more size and depth in the trenches. Play calling was very vanilla, as expected, but I have a feeling part of that is because the O-Line can't sustain blocks long enough to let plays develop outside the tackles. 4-8 to 7-5 is still my prediction, but the future looks bright knowing we are in fertile recruiting territory with a beautiful campus and great tradition keeping more great players closer to home.

I made this statement almost verbatim as it was happening! We had nothing to lose! I mean first of all according the to the "experts" we were three touchdown dogs, we cant go to a bowl regardless of win total and it was obvious we were gassed just like their D was. Outside of the NC losses this ranks at the top of list of most frustrating losses the only other is the Oregon State loss way back in the day when we snapped it over the punters head to give it away. 03-banghead

I think if our backup hadn't just come in, we go for it.

It was the right call. You force them to score a touchdown and, if they do, you are still within a field goal of winning.

100% agree. The fumble is what it was, it just hurt more being on the one. NCST did not execute on every play either and had an int so a few mistakes here and there is just part of the game. I am actually surprised how few bad throws and drops there were. I think the play calling was vanilla on purpose but if the coach knew it was going to be as good as it was more plays would have been called and not so many runs right up the middle. Only gripe is the not going for it after they had no trouble marching down the field on the previous series players can execute a play that is not called. No doubt that is a decision that sticks in a coaches head for ever. FIDO Sav St is in for a loooooonnnggg day.
