JUCO Questions
Still learning so please bear with me. What is a good mix/ratio of JUCO to HS players per recruiting class. I understand that b/c they are typically more mature (physically and FB IQ wise) that they can be used as stop gaps. I follow USM as well and they seem to be recruiting a TON of these guys...I guess looking for a quick turnaround?

Also, do you have to play two years or can you academically qualify and go D1 after one year? Oh yeah, one more, I've seen "3 to play 2." I'm guessing that means a D1 redshirt is possible. But, it kind of confuses me in a way. Does anyone redshirt at JUCO? Or, is it more likely they sit out a year to make grades.

Thanks,

Gal

RE: JUCO Questions
The amount of time a player has to play at the D1 level after playing JUCO can vary. It is typically 2 years, however, it can be 3 years or even only 1 year. You are correct on the what the "3 to play 2" means, a JUCO only has to years of playing eligibility but 3 years to exhaust the 2 years (a redshirt year). Some players may redshirt at a JUCO to give themselves an extra year of D1 eligibility.

RE: JUCO Questions
Gal, your notions are essentially correct.
D1 football players have 5 years to exhaust 4 years of eligibility. So the number of years spent in JUCO subtracts from that. Overwhelmingly, that is 2 years. It is possible to play 1 JUCO year and use play D1 for 3.

RE: JUCO Questions
the only way to get out of JUCO in 1 year is if you were a full qualifier out of HS.

you do not want to rely to heavily on JUCOs but as you mentioned they should be used as a stop gap. you can't build a program with sustained success on JUCOs

Yep, our boy Sherrill found that out.

Definitely hard as many may "miss" and are only in your program for 2yrs. Snyder from Kansas St was/is the master at winning with JC's. The multitude of them with Kansas also helps.

RE: JUCO Questions
The right JUCOs can give a quicker boost to your program when you're trying to raise it from the ashes. However, you need to develop that 4-year talent behind it or you're going to whiff a few too many times and find yourself run out of town.

Ideally, you take none. Realistically, I think you'd want to cut it off at 3-5 to fill needs. Sometimes, when you need to build a program quickly, you don't have that luxury and 8-10 is totally possible...although not sustainable.

I thought if a JUCO left after one year (without graduating) he had to sit out a year before playing?

Depends. I thought if they were fully qualified they were free to transfer to a juco and play immediately. Non qualifiers have to graduate or set out.
