Panthers, Canes to Resume Series ...
Eight years after an ugly football brawl created a rift between UM and FIU, the schools have struck a deal to resume their cross-town rivalry. Look for UM and FIU to announce that they have scheduled football games in 2018 at Sun Life Stadium and 2019 at a site-to-be-determined.

The 2019 meeting is technically an FIU home game, but the game will not be at FIU Stadium because it’s too small.

Not 100% sure how to feel about this. It's good that FIU will have more visibility in the city and it should draw a big crowd to Sun Life for the 2018 game. FIU has been really terrible in football lately so lots of Canes fans, myself included, are a little skeptical of what the reasons are for this game other than a cupcake win. Sure, it will be fun to have UM and FIU play not only at Sun Life but also probably at Marlins Park too, but still...

As long as this would replace our "FCS" level competitor for those two years I'd be cool with it, but if this is added to an FCS team as well... 03-banghead

Pretty much two home games for UM wherever it's played, but the visibility should help FIU. I hope I can make the games if I'm still down here in Miami at the time.

[EDIT]

100% echoed @ mathenis. No brawls and we'll be good.

As chiaPanther noted on our board, the 2006 & 2007 games averaged 52k. So yeah, our stadium is too small for a FIU/UM game. Having both a SunLife is not in our interest even though it will be home games for both teams.

It will definitely be said, because demand for that game would be super duper high. UM alone could easily fill FIU's stadium two or three times with the amount of interest the game may generate locally.

20,000 versus somewhere around, what 50k? at Marlins? Easy choice. Ticket revenues would go up dramatically with the game there. Plus, when's the last time UM played a game in Miami that wasn't OB or SLS? I know we'd like that more than playing at SLS again for an 'away game' at our home stadium...

I realize that you couldn't host Miami at home.
