RE: My thoughts on Troy
(09-02-2014 05:56 PM)BMarkey Wrote:  I am guilty each August of buying into the hype and predictions of a great Troy season and all the talent coming in and returning. This year was no exception.

Then Saturday happened. I was thrilled with the first drive. UAB couldn't stop anything Troy did. Then UAB adjusted and Troy did not adjust. As usual. Troy never adjusts, not even after halftime. That's coaching.

Troy's vaunted offensive line was awful and its two great RBs were ineffective at best.

Blakeney insisted on playing Brandon Silvers at QB most of the game. He was off on passes and not good. Junior college QB sensation Dontreal Pruitt enlivened the Troy offense when he finally played, then was removed. I fear this is another example of Blakeney playing the kid who paid his dues and traditionally deserved the time over the kid who is better and can win games. That is coaching.

The play calling was boring and predictable. That is coaching.

As usual, the special teams were crummy (missed short FG). No change here.

In the red zone during the first half, badly needing a TD. Troy goes for a FG and misses! Then in the third quarter, Troy goes for it o a fourth-and-1 from the Troy 30 and can't convert! UAB scores a play or three later. Terrible coaching decisions.

The team appeared, as usual, unprepared and showed no heart. That is coaching.

I truly hoped Blakeney would gut it out and put together a great season or two before retirement. He deserves a great end to a fantastic career in thanks for putting Troy on the college football map. Now, it appears the program is going to melt down as the powers-that-be at Troy mistakenly allow him to go out on his terms, while the fan base and financial support plummet.

This season could be over. I hope and pray I am wrong.

Defense did not make assignment changes with a flip.....kid or coach
Offense line ....if the time is greater than 4 seconds consistently that is on the QB......there were mistakes but not too many ......

QB....Silvers will be ok with time....but having not played for 2 years and no real hitting on them in practice....the game caught up to him real fast and its faster than 2 years ago in HS.....so his reads were slow to progress even if he ever got to his 2nd let alone 3 read....he needs time.....so yes Pruitt's eyes were up during play and has a chance to athletically make some plays even if he may not be in the long run as good as Silvers (considering coaches opinion)......right now Pruitt should play more minutes but bring Silvers along in right situations......My guess is Silvers will be pretty good as a Junior and Senior....unfortunately that's 2 years from now.

You're simply not going to get Robinson-like QB right out of the chute from a redshirt freshman and a JUCO. I don't think either of your guys played terribly, save for Silvers holding on to it too long, like you said.

It's just not a seamless plug-and-play, unless you're Texas A&M or Auburn. The new guy is going to have learning curve.

UAB started a JUCO QB and our quarterback play was pretty pedestrian, or it could have been a lot worse.

Troy has a great new fieldhouse coming with the end zone closure project next year. Coaches could and should be selling that to recruits now. The rest of Troy's facilities are at the top of the conference and ahead of what most MAC and CUSA schools have.

Troy has plenty of talent. I question the coaching most of all.

I think it is pretty clear that there are areas of coaching that could be improved.....for instance getting a field goal at end of half was lucky given the terrible management of clock from about the 2 minute mark

Then is it simply a situation where the game has passed CLB by??? Has he not been able to hire a good coordinator since Franklin???

That was the plan. Who knows now. I am sure the AD knows that project is absolutely critical to recruiting and fan support.
