RE: ACCESS BOWL COUNT DOWN -2014
Update after Week 5:

IMO, there are now only about 19 teams still in the hunt. Some have only the slightest of hopes and still must win their remaining games and knock off ranked opponents on the road; others have a much easier road and could still make up for another loss.

The champion of the American has the inside track - as long as it's ECU or Cincinnati. However, Marshall, Nevada, and N. Illinois are still in the hunt. If Marshall and N. Illinois lose in conference play, it's likely down to the American or the MWC. The Sun Belt champ only has the slightest of chances, and only if ALL other G5 champions have at least 2 losses.

AMERICAN
ECU
Cincinnati
Memphis (barely)
UCF (barely)
Houston (barely)
Temple (barely)

MOUNTAIN WEST
Nevada
Air Force (barely)
Boise St. (barely)
Colorado St. (barely)
SDSU (barely)
Utah St. (barely)
Wyoming (barely)

C-USA
Marshall

MAC
Northern Illinois

SUN BELT
Georgia Southern (must win out, NC State and Georgia Tech must shine)
LA-Monroe (slightest chance, but only if they beat Texas A&M)
South Alabama (slightest chance, but only if they beat S. Carolina)
Texas St. (barely, must win out and all other G5 champions have 2+ losses)

Congratulations to Boise State, G5 champion this season. I guess reports of their demise were exaggerated.

Their reward might expand in the near future if and when the B12 expands to 12 teams to allow a CCG to their resume. Between them and BYU, they are probably the most consistent non-P5 teams left having proven themselves for long periods of time.

Their basketball sucks and they have no market. An instant add would be incredibly myopic.

Much of the SEC basketball sucks, accept for a couple such as Kentucky and Florida (most years). It's football where the SEC shines and mostly cares about. Same could be said about the B12, who already have some good BB programs.

As for market, who cares, it gives them two things, SOS and boost them up to the required 12 teams fro a CCG. It's not like market additions will make or break the B12 in contract negotiations.

Then why not add Utah state or northern Illinois? Same can be said for both.

NIU has a stadium capacity of 23K and Utah State holds 25K. Boise State holds 37K. Boise probably needs to consider expanding if they want an invite to the B12.

Boise is 82 and 3 at home since 1999 with 4 top 25 finishes since that time. Utah State has played in a total of 8 bowl games while winning only 3. Prior to 2011 NIU had won a conference championship since the 1980's. Not exactly sustained success.

Boise State has the Access Bowl wrapped up, but where do the AAC co-champions stand in the ranking of Group of Five champions? Click here to read all my thoughts on the subject...

I'm not advocating either I'm just saying if you're going to add a school cause they're winning there are those who have sustained success and with larger facilities and in better markets.

Big12 will have 12 teams and a championship next year.
Not having one cost them the playoff spot. If Cincy or Memphis end up there the AAC will have a hard time making a vase for an access spot in the near future

Good for them, they earned it. If Memphis beat either one of their P5 opponents they're playing NYD.

IF the B12 expands it may add Boise but they won't be their first choice; it will be UCF & Cincy. Much better markets and talent bases to recruit.

They couldn't care a less about expanding their recruiting base. Texas has more then enough for that. How long do Texas or Oklahoma ever stay down? Not for long since they can easily get enough recruits from their base recruiting areas.

It's all about money and who can help them keep the most money, TV contracts, CFP, etc. Boise fits the money part perfectly with the relatively long term success.
