RE: 2014-15 Basketball Schedule Released
As a student trying to get the hype for the basketball team back around here, our away heavy non-conference schedule is a sad sight.

This won't be a long term type of situation. They needed the funds this year. Hype will be abundant before long.

Good to see UNCW fans active on this board. It is pretty solid

Surprising there is no D1 November home game. I really hope this is the last season we use our non conference slots for Non D1 opponents.

Tough looking schedule and for the small amount of guaranteed money it makes it even more harsh. They should get a lot more money for those games.

It sure looks to me like they are getting everything cleared away in Keatts' first year - when his goodwill is the highest - and that includes taking care of every road commitment right away.

Funny thing is that if they survive that, and if they can actually hit some shots, this year's team ought to be able to do unexpectedly well in the CAA - which still is a weaker than usual conference.

The truth is that during our implosion, problems have led to all kinds of negative feedback loops. Getting all of the old obligations taken care of this year is smart, even if if means being road warriors and local fans not seeing much of the team until conference play.

If we can do reasonably OK with that non-conference schedule (I'm not sure how you measure that), we might be a surprisingly good position to cause real trouble in the still-weakened CAA once we get into that schedule.

Since this is the time of year for hope to spring eternal, wouldn't it be something if we got a decent seed come tournament time and then hit on all cylinders and then......?

RE: 2014-15 Basketball Schedule Released
It's going to be interesting to see how this team plays. I'll just write that. It would appear that they would try to push tempo given the speed at PG, overall athleticism at wings and size/athleticism down low. A shooter will have to emerge somehow however. That's the one potential problem that I see here with the Hawks this year. The following year, the Hawks will have a bevy of shooters, but that's next year. ODU played close to the vest on offense and played good D from the game I saw last year. That was the difference in last years game. ODU was simply tougher physically. This was something that happened to the Hawks in recent years. And, not having good guard play in that game (several games) was a killer.

Keatts stresses conditioning and that will give UNCW a shot in certain contests this year. They will be in good shape this year and that along with reputably better defense (let's wait a bit yet) should give the Hawks more fast break chances. They are going to need them this particular year. A confident Ponder and/or a leaner Spruill/Jackson at the wings would give UNCW a real boost. I've got a feeling that the PG position will be a pleasant surprise. And, the possibility exists that they could play both PG's at the same time, at times, as well since they have proven that they can score and have quicks-you give up size there though. The frontcourt should be a relative strength with Ced/Dylan and Yemi/Ogbodo/Gettys. Too many question marks right now, but it should be fun to follow their progress.

John Goldsberry made an appearance at the ECU-UNCW Women's Soccer game tonight. Apparently he has a cousin who plays for ECU.

He had no influence on this cousin? This is an outrage!

RE: 2014-15 Basketball Schedule Released
I'm under the impression that this will be a successful season for the Hawks. I know there's a lot of new factors in play and its hard to get a gauge on how good they will actually be (and a nasty non-conference schedule) but I think we'll overachieve come conference play. We were in almost every game last year and I see no reason to say Keatts won't have us winning those close games this year

I think they can win this season but as far as Keatts being the difference I have no idea. There is no reason to think a guy with zero head coaching experience at the college level will make the right moves at the end of games. He also has no experience sitting on the bench to help him out in tight spots on the road at the end of the game.Maybe he is a great game coach and maybe he has to learn on the job-who knows.

There's also no reason to think he CANNOT until proven otherwise.

Our prior coach here had plenty of experience AND a guy with even more experience sitting next to him on the bench his final season, yet we still had no winning seasons. There's no rule that says you have to have lots of experience under your belt to win basketball games.

P.S. Missed you.

RE: 2014-15 Basketball Schedule Released
It appears he can recruit and that is the real battle in college basketball.Get the good players and win and if not then you better be able to coach.Maybe he can do both and then you have a chance to be good for a few years. The players there now should be able to win in this league.Just the fact that they are more mature and have experience in close games will be a huge advantage to them.
