He writes good summarys, I like his previews of the MAC. He doesn't get into all the gossip and innuendo, very professional and objective.

He got right into the gossip, that's why you loved it.

This guy was so thorough he thought TVT was going to be the hardest player to replace 03-drunk

He qualified that statement with he didn't play but his leadership will be missed. I think in the NIU game we saw an example of what he meant.

You guys just hate it when a real, employed journalist writes anything objective about WMU football, you go on the attack....... like drones for the queen bee.

Oh boy, silly me. I actually thought we were debating whether it was a good article, when in reality we were playing the "I say black, you say white" game. I should have picked up on it quicker. My bad.

Wow, your expectations are low.

But getting back to this article. Good journalism tells something we weren't aware of or privy to. There's not one thing in this piece that we didn't already know.

It maybe didn't tell US something that WE weren't already privy to because we rehash the same thing over and over here on a daily basis. But if someone in Cleveland or Akron or wherever else was reading that, they wouldn't know who WMU had returning. They might not even realize how big a buffoon out coach is at times.

Sorry, but I just don't understand what it is that you want these guys to give you. Apparently, you know better than any of them anyways, so its never going to be enough.

How is what this guy wrote any different from what you will get in any of your nationally published preseason mags? Its probably not, but you don't seem to be killing those guys for their "lazy" coverage. This is what a preseason preview is. A recap of last season, a synopsis of the off season, a look at who is returning, who might have an impact and what the pulse is around the team heading into the new season. Basically, exactly what this guy did. Like I said, we all know that about WMU, because that's who we follow and bicker about on here every day.

If this guy puts up a similar article about CMU (although you apparently also know everything about them) EMU, BG, Miami, Kent, Toledo, NIU whoever, those are things that I would want to know as a fan of a league rival.

RE: Article from C-town
ob·jec·tive
əbˈjektiv/Submit
adjective
1. (of a person or their judgment) not influenced by personal feelings or opinions in considering and representing facts.

"...grand statements that really did not sit well with local fans as the defeats mounted."

"This was a solid MAC program prior to last season."

"A quick return to .500 or better will improve the mood greatly around Kalamazoo, Michigan."

And then we get a whopping two-sentence break-down on the offense, defense (which doesn't even mention our best defensive player), TVT our biggest loss (can I get a Jaime Wilson? Brian Fields? Really?), and then the "Player to Watch" is Corey Davis (genius! really went out on a limb there)

I'm sorry, but what exactly is "objective" about any of those statements cited in the article? This guy reads message boards, slaps them into an article, and calls it journalism. It says a lot about some of the people here that we eat this kind of garbage up and call it gospel. It's no wonder we don't expect more from our local newspaper.

First off Waldo, you make a phone call to the programs SID, and they will set you up with members of the staff.

Then you'll probably learn was actually the starting QB formost of the year wasn't actually TVT, and his graduating wasn't really a big deal............or you can go to the bookstore and old Phil Steele stuff.

This guy wrote up similar summaries for all of the other teams in the MAC. Same format, same # of words, everything. Why in the world should a writer in Cleveland spend any more time than necessary writing a summary about a 1-11 team?

Let's get over ourselves here and hope that next year he has to write "most surprising", "loaded with talent", and "dominant force" when talking about WMU Football.

I don't know about the rest of you...but I find it enjoyable to read about things I don't already know about. Articles like the Ash/Atkins connection, the Monette piece from last year, etc... I don't find it appealing to read about stuff that can easily be pieced together by simply looking at stats and graduation losses. I don't need Elton Alexander to tell me that the natives are restless. Give me SOMETHING that could be considered "insider" knowledge. Like what RB is #1 on the depth chart. Or what LB's have shown the most promise so far.

Seriously fellas, everything in his article is spot on. My problem is that ANYONE who spent 10 minutes on the internet could have written it.

So now you're saying David Drew is reporting gossip? From yesterday's article:

Quote:Phillips and sophomore Corey Davis appear to be locks at two receiver spots for WMU

Quote:Freshman Jarvion Franklin got most of the carries with the first team offense while fifth-year senior Dareyon Chance also worked with the starters. It seems the 6-foot, 220-pound Franklin is working his way to being named the starter.

Quote:This group has a strong showing Saturday, headlined by sophomore Jamar Simpkins, who played a lot last year and appears to have bulked up in the offseason. Fleck could be heard praising Simpkins after he disrupted several run plays.

Now this is good journalism. Good stuff that those of us on the outside don't know (and want to know). This is the stuff I appreciate.

Can't wait to see your attempt to back out of this one...

No. I can log on here to catch up on gossip. And drama for that matter.

I want to read about things I don't know. I want to read about who has an inside edge on what position. I want to read about what might be motivating our OL this year...ditto for our LB's. That's not gossip. That's insight into our program. Insight that I don't have because I'm not close to anyone in the program. That's my personal preference. I don't need a journalist to paint me a cloudy picture of WMU football under PJ. I already know the record and what's at stake. If a non Kalamazoo journalist is going to write about WMU, it would be nice if it wasn't a cookie cutter article.

I'd like to read more about that video clip of the young man in a wheel chair, the ROTC day and the pool day. I want to read more about our PLAYERS.

But the rest of MAC fandom doesn't - especially at the Cleveland Plain Dealer. He didn't write that for US, he wrote it for THEM.

I was far more interested in learning that CMU has no excuse for not winning (returning nearly every starter), or how Akron might put the pieces together to have a breakout year, or that Toledo's defense looks to be more aggressive under their new DC.

I agree, but this was a half-azz effort. This is why Phil Steele has the reputation he has. Compare the two and look at the difference in quality.

I know Elton isn't going to write a piece about the young man in a wheel chair, the ROTC program or the pool day. I would expect DD to pick up that stuff...assuming Fleck allows him and others into practice for the duration. If he doesn't, then that's a whole different matter.

If he wrote anything similar to the info about Akron, Toledo or CMU...then I would be much more happy. That wasn't remotely the case.

Who bashed DD and where? Certainly you aren't referring to this:

So tell me again... now you're saying David Drew is a gossip columnist because he sees and reports certain kids winning position battles? Please explain/backtrack.
