RE: North Alabama to A-Sun ?
It's a logical step for UNA, but if I were the Big South I'd go full bore after UNA, West Georgia, and one other.
I'm shocked we haven't heard rumblings of the A-Sun going after Bellarmine and/or Trevecca Nazarene in Nashville. Bringing both in would set up a nice little pod of northern based teams for this ol' place.

Trevecca was NAIA until only recently, so Division I won't be happening for them for a while.

If that happens, you'd have quite a bit more attention on your conference. Even for those not hardcore UNA fans, I and tons of other Alabama fans I know have secondary loyalties to UNA and follow the football team closely.

RE: North Alabama to A-Sun ?
I would be very surprised. UNA voted down a $7 per student athletic surcharge to ensure the athletic department would have the financial wherewithal to make a move. Besides, the Board's feasibility study said the university would have to increase enrollment to nearly 12,000, which is almost double what it is today, in order for this to be a long term deal.

There isn't room in Florence for 12,000 students.

A lot of this is lingering desire. The move died in 2011.

Personally, I like the way the board handled this and the direction they have chosen going forward. They are focusing on the academic side of the school instead of the athletic, adding a handful of programs which are going to be useful to the local economy.

Given today's announcement, UAB to the Atlantic Sun may be more likely.

I don't know why it wouldn't work. They said from the beginning that they could fund the move with no extra cost to the students. After they announced they wanted to move up the enrollment when up. Now they are having to build more dorms. There have been athletes quoted in the paper that said they wanted to come to UNA because of there desire to move to D1. I agree that they need to focus on the academics and I think they are, part of the stipulations was to build a new Science and technology building and they did. The Shoals area would support a D1 School without any problem. I have a problem with the way the board handled this situation, it was divided and I know the some of the members on the board and they would just assume that there was no athletic program at UNA. They have had problems with not letting the coaches have what they needed for the program with plenty of money to do whatever they needed. For the most part they are politicians or business owners that all they want to do is control something and bank up money so they can brag about how much money they saved the school. Anyway that got into a rant I didn't mean to happen.

You hit the nail on the head. I know a few Auburn fans the same way.

The dorms are being built for students that aren't there.

Enrollment is down, and down considerably.

That's the most pressing matter right now and the administration is dealing with it. The D1 move was placed on the back burner 4 years ago when things were looking good for the school. Those circumstances have changed and it is precisely that change that has killed this move.

The enrollment is only down because of lack of room during all of the building that is going on. I have a niece that is attending UNA and is helping with student affairs. She said until everything is finished they are having to not accept students that they normally have room for. She said in the last 3 years applications have tripled. What does that tell you? The only problem with UNA going to D1 is people who don't know or don't really have anything to do with them saying that they won't make it because they are not Alabama or Auburn. It's the same thing that happened with JSU and Troy.

RE: North Alabama to A-Sun ?
I could see a possible merger going on between 3 D1 conferences and GSC. Move all the football playing members from A-Sun except for the Pioneer football to the Big South. Move the Big South basketball schools down to A-Sun. Bring all the football playing members from GSC to Big South including the Affiliate Florida Tech. Move the none-football GSC schools to the A-Sun.
Delta State can move upgrade and join the Southland. With Liberty and Coastal Carolina could be moving from the Big South? Big South needs football members. With possible movers from A-Sun? They will have plenty of schools to get up there in time when they lose more.

There have been talk about UWG and UNA going to the A-Sun with football in the Big South. I Agree with your idea. I just don't see it happening. VSU has already said that they will not go to D1.

It's the same thing that happened with JSU and Troy.

I don't know where she got that information, or it is wishful thinking.

Applications have remained more or less steady. UNA in the last 5 years has had acceptance rates between 75 and 88%. Those numbers do not reflect a dramatic increase in applications when coupled with the fact that enrollment is down.

The difference between UNA and JSU and Troy is the fact that both of those schools, at one point or another, had leadership that had a vision. UNA's leadership over the last 30 years has been absolutely horrendous. UNA has just sort of existed.

Now, they are spending money they don't have to attract students that are not otherwise interested while revenue declines. That's a recipe for disaster if something doesn't change.

A move to D1 is going to require a dramatic shift in leadership in my opinion. UNA has all of the makings of an FCS squad, except the leadership to do it. Florence can easily support an FCS team.

UNA will need to get back to 7500+ students though.

As a University of Montevallo Falcons fan, I would love to see your scenario come true DavidSt. AUM will bite as well, I'm sure. The travel would be hard on UWA though because they're kinda out there by the Mississippi state border, and they're kinda smallish for the Southland Conference.
