OL vs DL
I assume that this years returning OL will assist in the growth of our DL. I wonder if this will actually have a better impact on how well prepared our defensive line will be going into game one, practicing against a much improved OL in camp.

Discuss...

Just trying to give this tread some traction... seems like threads here only take off once one or more of the above commentary is inserted... Maybe its like a meta tag or something similar to give the thread more relevance... Giving it a try to see..

RE: OL vs DL
Ash should be a big help with the simple physical disadvantage we had. I'm still worried about the DE position though. Hopefully someone (Braster?) steps up to provide a semblance of a pass rush.

I definitely think that Ash will give us some size/speed/length on the DL that we didn't necessarily have last year... I am hoping that we find a couple DE candidates on this team that really surprise us... At this point I think that the tempo that Fleck is preaching helps them to overcome some size issues with more heart and a motor... fingers crossed...

Wasn't Turner named scout team POY when he redshirted? Hopefully he can step up. Need at least one edge guy. I thought McKinney was coming along late. Not sure if they have him at DE or LBer this year.

I still think Devante Lee has got to become a factor this year. At 6'6", 230 lbs how can he not be... He was listed at 230 lbs. back in high school. I have to imagine he's put a lot more weight and muscle on since then too.

RE: OL vs DL
It would be nice to see some of the DE's with updated weight numbers on the website. Most of the young guys are listed really skinny. Turner is listed at 6-3 and 218. Hard to have an impact at that size and gotta figure he has gained from a redshirt year. Braster, Lee and Bailey are listed bigger, but they never update the website in a timely manor.

DE is the key position in my opinion for a turnaround year for the defense. Generate a pass rush and not have to blitz a ton.

Ash should help clog up the middle and the Freshman Matich is really good. Bigtime bulldog with a good motor.

Our last solid DE was 6'5" 212, and he played significantly for the Browns last year.

RE: OL vs DL
I saw this pic on twitter right before camp and it looks like we got some pretty small kids coming in... Is it just me or does this look like football check in, or a 100 level class waiting on the prof to show up?

It's amazing how these guys are going to transform in just the next couple years...

Those same guys also look 25-30 lbs. heavier/stronger in pads too. A little deceiving but I see what you're getting at.

He also ran a sub 11 second 100 and got pushed around a lot on the negative side and now plays linebacker.

Now Babin...That was a solid DE and went 260.

I think Hazel was an exception to the rule.

Forgive me if I am wrong here... But didn't Browning and Allsbury bookend a pretty darn good DL back in the late 90's? If I remember right, those two were monsters.

Yeah. Legit size in the late 90's early 2000's on the DL and specifically at DE.
