Quote:PJ's team had a horrible year. DD was understandably critical of certain things that happened during the year. Did PJ expect 1-11 wouldn't warrant criticism?

I agree. It comes down though to what was asked by BL -- what was written?

Quote:Problem is, it's not a journalist's job to be critical. They can chose to take it in that direction if they wish, but then they should also understand the repercussions.

Well, I think that depends on the situation and what the critique is. I think a journalist's job is to raise questions when stuff's really bad -- but not to bash or cause stirs, as a hometown sports journalist should err on the side for the home team.

With that said though, I think a hometown sports journalist would be a fruitful one if the home team suddenly dropped like a rock and performed incredibly awful with a new young coach -- and said journalist raised questions, thus critical. But not like a fan b!tching about it or like some political talk show host or anything -- no way. But Honest, critical inquiries & comments when it's suitable (but not being the Theme of it all).

So IMO, it's about attitude and what's said. I want to know what DD did/wrote to possibly strike a chord with WMU football!

In fairness, I don't think PJ liked the way the mid season extra conditioning event was portrayed.

From what I remember, it was just reported, no editorial opinion? Did I miss something?

At least now we're getting somewhere....

I think we all saw it for what is worth. PJ wanted it to come off as some major coaching adjustment. We saw it as a guy placing blame. DD was neutral, again...it's what he didn't say.

01-lauramac2 Damn DD, damn him all to hell!!!!

I'm sure his band of merry men on "that website" made it sound earth shattering, what more does he want?

Articles like this sure aren't going to do you any favors in getting in the good graces of the coaching staff. Common sense stuff here:

Quoting a parody website is bad? Really? 03-melodramatic

This is getting worse with each attempt at an explanation, not clearer.

RE: Fans get to watch 15 minutes of Saturday's scrimmage
I'm wondering whether this isn't more about isolating the team from web board and other fan negativity than anything else. It would be difficult to come up with too much to bi!ch about with only 15 minutes of observation. While it sucks for the tried and true Bronco fans who want to be there, I can understand why it's so important to keep an atmosphere of positivity going at all times for these players, this year in particular with so many talented underclassmen. Let them begin the season believing that they can be invincible. After all, who knows?

That could be plausible, but this occurred last year too.

Got sidetracked and didn't arrive until about 11:45. I went to the guy with the lanyards and he said, are you media? I said no, but was told I could attend the entire scrimmage. He said, oh, see the guy with the tie. When I went to see the guy with the tie, I realized there were already about 250 people in the stands, so I just walked in.

Scrimmage wise, I saw nothing of interest. Just a bunch of very VERY basic stuff executed at a low level of competence. 5 on a scale of 10. It's early, but this practice reminded me of how low I felt after the spring game.
#33 Leo Ekwoge looks to be a keeper.

If things don't improve real fast, I'm stuck on the 2-3 win scenario again. Sorry, but that is my impression based only on watching 40 minutes or so.

What did you see that you thought needed improving?

I've watched 50 practices in the last half dozen years. Great plays on offense were almost always against the second unit and resulted because of blown assignments. Defense was almost always ahead of the offense in fall camp, so it often seemed like nothing much was happening.

Hopefully this plays out like the men's basketball team this year. I thought we looked terrible against K College.

IIRC, there was some tension between PJ and DD early on. DD was trying to set up an MLive chat with PJ (at a time when PJ was struggling hard to establish himself in town) and then PJ canceled out of the chat the day it was scheduled. DD presented it pretty starkly in his column and PJ almost certainly took that as a betrayal.

That's how I remember it anyway.
