Possible way the AAC may become a Power conference
AAC may become a football power conference in the next five years if:
1. We win games that build credibility
2. By winning, the AAC separates itself from the other G5 conferences
2. ESPN engineers a compromise with the existing P5 conferences
3. Compromise is:
A. the AAC takes in the four strongest teams at that time
B. perhaps BYU, Boise, Fresno and SDSU or someone else like a UTSA
C. Air Force and Army get waivers to stay with Navy
D. CUSA, MWC, MAC, and the SuBelt form a new NCAA Division
E. The P5 becomes the P6

Thoughts?

RE: Possible way the AAC may become a Power conference
Why would ESPN force a compromise since they are the ones that caused this situation to begin with?

RE: Possible way the AAC may become a Power conference
I wish people would get it out of their heads that there is a "becoming a power conference." You're either a part of the club or you're outside of the club.

The richest people are WAY, WAY richer than the middle class. The richest in our situation live in the mansions (SEC, B10, B12, ACC, P12). However we still have people who:

1. A nice house in the nice part of town (AAC).
2. A decent house in a farily respectable neighborhood (MWC).
3. An old house that was nice at one time. Neighborhood is starting to go to 01-rivals. (MAC)
4. A double-wide trailer in a run down part of town (CUSA)
5. A crappy single-wide beside a landfill (Sunbelt)

Each of the 5 tiers has some upward mobility they can improve upon but none of the 5 have the "it factor" that it takes to become a millionaire and live in a mansion.

Sorry, I disagree. If your premise is correct, then why is the AAC Commissioner doing all he can to make the AAC a power conference?

Big East did most or tried to do most of that and they were rewarded with a DEMOTION.

Bottom line: Can't join them, beat the hell out of 'em every chance you get......................

I just don't see them ever granting the AAC the same voting power as the P5. That, a major bowl tie-in, a $20M/school/year TV deal and a MUCH larger fan base is what makes a power conference. If Aresco can pull all that off he is essentially a god. in other words, that's just not all going to happen.

Best case scenario is we close the gap to maybe a $10M TV deal, we continue to grow our fan bases, therefore getting better bowls but I don't think they'll ever treat us as equals. College administrators are among the most arrogant, egotistical, elitist groups that there are.

Blunderbuss no offense but man you really need to get past your bitterness. The old beast failed because of poor business model along with very poor management. Move on and get past it. You quality of life will improve

If we perform well and add Navy as planned we should be in a good position. I think our position is enhanced with BYU and any of the other military academies (Air Force or Army). A western wing with the best of the MWC could work but not needed if we get BYU IMO. The P5 are not going to cut out Navy, Army, and AF from participating in the highest level of CFB if they desire to. It's political but you've got to play the game. Having Navy may save our asses.

We may not ever get the money the P5 of today gets but I do believe we can stay in their ballpark if we stay the course and make some shrewd moves down the road by adding a few more teams.

I think this is a reasonable near to mid-term goal and could feasibly be achieved in say 5-10 years.

I think becoming a power conference is possible---but very unlikely. It would require this group staying together for a very long time with no defections. It will require a solid contract that shows most of the AAC games on national TV. Finally, it would require this group to build their fan bases to the point where most all our schools are over 40K in attendance, with an average attendance is around 50K, and we have a couple of burly programs with 70K+ attendance (these would be our "anchor" programs). That type of development is going to take literally decades to accomplish. Add in some on the field success, and you have a conference much like the ACC in the late 1980's and early 1990's--but without the geographic identity.

I really wish people would stop with the whole 'they won't leave army, navy, and afa behind'. Guess what? They already have. Neither the Orange, Fiesta, Peach, Cotton, Rose, or Sugar Bowl signed any of those schools to guaranteed contracts. Know what that means? They won't give a rats behind if the AAC, MWC, or CUSA picks them up. They won't ever shed a tear. Notre Dame is the only independent prize in football, and it has been and will continue to be. The academies aren't bringing crap to our league but a knife to take their piece of our revenue pie. Nobody outside of us will care about Army vs Temple or Air Force vs UCF or Navy vs Tulsa. They just won't.

I just want Navy and AF because as a fan, I wouldn't mind seeing them at Nippert. Army...eh, not so much.
