Being young, aware of how fortunate he is, and completely focused on his job, it sounds like a perfectly logical list to me.
Mine would be different, but I'm in a completely different place in life.
Thomas Edison - I'd like to learn more about all the experimental failures he endured to get to the successes that define him now.
Charles Darwin - I'd like to understand how he came to his conclusions, and discuss with him how he dealt with the skeptics.
Abraham Lincoln - I'd like to discover all the unknown decisions and dilemmas he faced during the Civil War, and what his private thinking process was.
Robin Williams - With all the seriousness going on at that dinner party, we'd need one guy to make us laugh.
Oh, and the party would be a tailgate on Tiger Lane, catered by Steven Reichlen. Except I'd make him use charcoal or wood (to hell with the rules, lol). And we would have unlimited craft beer, ice cold. On a clear, crisp October day.
Edison is a great choice. If you are ever in south Florida hit Fort Myers and visit his winter home there. Amazing.
But I didn't know we could invite the deceased.
Mark Twain would be a cool deceased one.
Yeah, Twain would be in my next four.

I read all of the answers in this thread before I actually read the article. Reading the replies gave me the impression the Coach was way off base, minus a few that thought his responses made sense. And after reading the article i'm convinced even more that those that don't like Coach will find anything to bash him about. Even John Martin, and this is only my opinion, has taken on the personality of GP, and that is to at every chance, stir up the segment of the masses that want to bash. It's a smaller, but WAAAAY more vocal group than those that are either pleased, or somewhat pleased with the progress of the program. This will guarantee responses either in comments, or calls on the radio program. There was nothing wrong with his list, and for someone to make the veiled comment basically calling Coach a boy, because of course, all of the other coaches are grown men, is someone that simply doesn't like CJP. His list was fine in my opinion.

Absolutely, perhaps our most interesting American Author (a stretch, but one that is defensible in my book). F/L on the campaign trail '74 is still one of my favorite all time reads.
His brother? Interesting.

1. I have my fingers crossed, but that seems to be the direction he is pursuing; JM is young, still impressionable. He's got a lot of choices left to make. Maybe the trend will change.
2. I've no psychology expert, but I've been involved in groups of polarized folks. It's pretty easy to see that the ones who attack the loudest are disturbed about a lot of stuff in their lives....much more than just the object of their attack. Those who see the direction we want to go as a university and a community are often silent when the others do their schtick, one reason being that the attackers melt down into that puddle about their rights as fans being violated. While it doesn't bother me so much that these people want to criticize and condemn until their dying day, I am going to point at them. lol
3. Yea, it was a list that he probably shot off the top of his head...one person just naturally following the next. If CJP wanted to devote hours to pondering his answer, he might have made a different list. But Josh Pastner is the master recruiter. He probably gave the question less than 30 seconds of his time.

I did stand-up. High amateur level, had a couple of rooms I ran, but never got to the paid/pro level.
My understanding is that Rodney Dangerfield was universally loved by comics. He failed early, worked his way back, and was supposedly ALWAYS supportive of comics coming up. Comedy is a very solo experience and not something that people are generally supportive of.
I've heard tons of stories of Dangerfield going up to a starting comic and complementing them while offering good advice about their bits.
Sounds like a class, class guy. I'd be honored to meet him if he were still alive...
