RE: Mirimichi
Fun fact, Justin Timberlake is actually the second pop star to have an ownership stake in the Golf Course currently known as Mirimichi.

Back when the course was still known as Big Creek it was owned by an investment group out of Minneapolis and one of the investors in the group was the artist formerly known as Prince.

I washed golf carts there back in my high school days.

What I heard Wolo say was that Timberlake has tried to sell it but can't get what he wants for it, so he is considering "donating" the course to the University.

Why would the University accept a donation of a money sapping proposition 18 miles from campus with no educational value?

Millions of dollars for redevelopment of the course is already done and the income to recoup the redevelopment dollars could take years and Timberlake realizes that. To try to sell the course to recoup those dollars sooner than later isn't happening and thus the idea for a donation that causes a nice tax deduction.

With the redevelopment complete, the biggest expense is maintenance and that is what the University must decide; will anticipated income cover on-going maintenance and operations as well as having a university golf course, which many, many universities also have.

There could be educational value included in this donation, but that is another whole discussion. If this does come to pass, and it doesn't become an on-going "expense", I don't see a downside.
I agree operating costs could make it cost prohibitive. If it were manageable, why not create programs in hospitality/resort management and environmental studies? I know its not a golf resort with rooms per se like courses in AZ, but there are other hospitality aspects that could look good on a resume/cv. Speaking of AZ, Memphis could use one or two golf resorts...

Have the School of Hotel Management/Hospitality run a resort like Pinehurst in NC……. just an idea.
How far is this course from Memphis? Is it in Shelby Co?

I watched the HBO segment on golf last night. I had no clue it was down that much. The Golden Bear says he is designing zero courses in NA right now, while doing a bunch in Russia and China.

Yes. It's about 4 miles south of Millington, and maybe 3 miles east of Shelby Forest, just west of Hwy 51.

Yea a lot of people are busy, and it takes 4 hours to play, but how many people watch TV for 4 hours? Get outside and play people.

I don't see anyone bashing it, people are discussing its steep fall in popularity as a sport than many used to play.

Exactly. I wasn't bashing golf. Been playing it all my life. Played varsity in college. But when he said golf wasn't falling in popularity, it got me curious, so I decided to look it up, and found the article I linked. it does seem to be in trouble, but I certainly wasn't bashing it. But it does take a long time to play, is relatively expensive, and nobody in golf seems to be taking any steps to solve those issues.

Maybe some of it has to do with Tiger Woods' popularity. He was an icon...now not so much.

I played competitive sports for years. I play golf to get the competitive juices going now. Played in a tournament a couple of weeks ago. Nothing like it. Keeps me young.

I think I will be safe, I think it's been about three years or so since I have played out there. I think it's the toughest city owned golf course in Memphis.

After reading this thread, I agree that golf is down as far as tee times now. But the price hasn't gone down. 04-cheers

Making it a home course is pretty easy and done by an agreement between the team/school and course management/owners.

You know the UM could just take over the existing maintenance shop that's out there right?

UM could use it for their home course if they invested in some facilities. MS State is using Old Waverly as their home course-

Yep. Fantastic. One of the best stretch runs in recent major history. A lot of fun to watch. As Mickelson said later, McIlroy is just playing better than everybody else right now. But it was a thrilling ride all day.

Old waverly is a beautiful course and you have a lot of MS State turf grass grads to maintain it.
