I haven't seen all sunbelt marching bands perform, so my info is very limited, but here it goes

1.Troy
2.TXST
3.Gaso
4.NMSU
5.UL
6.ASU
7.App State
8.USA
9.Idaho
10.ULM
11.GSU

Georgia Southern's band has a good resume but not enough for 3rd place sadly. Also, Georgia State's band is way better than last place. I would stick us both in the middle somewhere.

I may be partial by I think the Jaguar Marching Band should rank around 2nd-3rd. Here are a couple inside the Superdome...

Halftime at N.O. Saints, Military Appreciation Day... USA! USA!

UTA has a very good marching band. I have not seen all the ones in that list but I think ours would rank up there pretty high.

I like the sound of UTA , the 2012 show I found on you tube is something only the small bands can pull off.

The article is a little dated (2012) but it gives a good snapshot of NMSU's Pride of New Mexico band.

I have been in many stadiums (FAU, FIU, Miami and others) when Troy brought its pep band. With 100-150 people, it sounded like many schools' full bands. I had people ask me why the band didn't do a halftime show.

One of my favorite Appalachian traditions is the Marching Mountaineers playing the Tennessee Waltz after every football game. 30 years ago or so they were playing a show with the Waltz, it was so popular that we made it a tradition. It's always the last song played before the band leaves the stadium for the night.

RE: Battle of the Bands
I've always liked it when visiting opponents would bring their band to App State for a football game, it really adds to the environment. Last year NC A&T, a traditional HBCU, brought their band and I must say it was the best band that's ever played in Kidd Brewer. I love those bands who play LOUD and really March like they do. Here's a clip from the post game show, a good bit of our fans stuck around to watch even after a tough loss. This makes me look forward to seeing Troy's band if they ever come up the mountain.

I stuck around after the NC A&T game because of this:

I personally never liked bands like NC A&Ts. They sacrifice musicality for volume. But I'm also an alumni of the Marching Mountaineers 03-wink so I'm biased

This is TROYs PEP band at WKU a few years ago. Our Pep band is louder than most of your full bands. Ask Chiefsfan lol.

Our marching band made an ESPN top ten list last year IIRC. It was for their Macklemore cover.

Troy did a great job with the Hawaii Five-O contest entry a few years ago and should have won it.

RE: Battle of the Bands
Troy has a great sounding band. I have seen some good ones. They just have a major college band sound like Alabama, or Florida. I have not seen TXST band in person but just from the video they have a good band also.

If UL could get there numbers to 300 which is there now, but the difference is just having top quality players with 70% brass and 30% woodwinds makes all the difference in the world. Plus having a good band director helps also

Never have quite wrapped my mind around how a band with the name "North Carolina's Band of Distinction" plays a song about another state as their signature song. One would think something like Appalachian Spring would get the nod for that. I graduated in 1977 and I can't recall not ever hearing it played. Must have been former director Joe Phelps' favorite song.

You can see the temp bleachers we had to add in the SEZ.

We currently have 310 right now. Will end up with 325-350 by the end of camp.

glad to see the txst band..in the old days the band there was just to accompany the strutters, but I see they have ramped up a notch..
