You would essentially have conferences play nine conference games and non-conference games versus each of the other three conferences, then take the top two, three or four teams from each of the four conferences and have a playoff.

That would seem to get stale in about three years of the same old, same old.

There are only 32 NFL teams and folks get pretty excited about that stuff.

RE: Ohio State AD on B1G future expansion (trickle down?)
There are currently 66 teams among the P5 (including Notre Dame). When they get "autonomy" they will likely be set in number unless economics tell them to expand. There may be some movement among those 66 schools to better themselves individually by moving from one P5 conference to another P5 conference but that is no guarantee that a G5 school(s) will move up. Doesn't matter if Memphis, Cincy, BYU, UConn or some other G5 schools' consistency of performance rates being in the P5 unless economics says they do. And with autonomy and the new requirement that those 66 teams have to play an out of conference P5 school, those 66 schools are insulating themselves against a wannabe from the G5 gaining a public perception that they belong in the P5 and they are keeping all the money to make it tough on the G5 schools to compete from a resources prospective. So whether its 4 or 5 super-conferences, it doesn't matter. They are all members of the club, its exclusive & they will keep it that way unless economics says otherwise. That's my Debbie Downer opinion, hoping I'm wrong.

I guess so. Nobody bets on college football.

Fantasy football is one step removed from Dungeons and Dragons.

RE: Ohio State AD on B1G future expansion (trickle down?)
I believe the Power 5's threat to leave the NCAA is a bluff meant to bully the Group of 5 into more autonomy. As I understand, the NCAA's best argument for keeping all of the money and not giving any to the athletes rests on the charade of the "student-athlete" designation. In other words, if the NCAA looks more and more like a professional sports organization and less and less like an amateur organization whose primary purpose is education, then the legal risk rises and rises that the Power 5 will lose all of that money. That's why you've seen more emphasis being placed on "scholarships for life" and increased focus on academics (e.g. mandated less time playing football, more time for studying, etc.) The Power 5 has to make this whole deal look legitimate at least from an education perspective.

And that's why they're scheduling a vote on this issue shortly. The O'Bannon case is pending, and from what I hear, it didn't go well for the NCAA. As I understand, there was a tremendous amount of testimony and evidence demonstrating that the Power 5's emphasis on education is a sham. So the Power 5 are using the O'Bannon case to cattle-prod the have-nots into conceding more and more power to them. And I have no doubt that the Power 5 are dangling a little bit of money as a fake inducement to the Group of 5 in order to sweeten the pot. Play along and we may include you at the big-boy table. If not, we're taking our ball and going to play elsewhere.

But in reality and oddly enough, the Power 5 need the auspices of the NCAA to give them cover on the legal side of things. Don't think that the O'Bannon lawyers won't use it against the Power 5/NCAA, if the Power 5 leave and form an organization/division that looks an awful lot like a professional sports league. So I don't think there's an ice cube's chance in h*ll that the Power 5 will leave. I just hope that the Group of 5 realize that this is a unique opportunity. Leverage and timing are everything in business.

Don't think there is much of a threat of the P5 leaving the NCAA unless they don't get some level of autonomy &/or the remaining Div 1 schools go on a vendetta against the P5 establishing rules that aren't compatible with P5 goals. And it appears the P5 will get what they want. Doesn't seem to be much opposition. But the P5 also doesn't have any motivations aside from increased revenue to want to add non-P5 schools to the "club". And there don't seem to be any reasonable scenarios where a G5 schools would add revenue to a P5 conference.

There will end up being 64 teams in the four remaining "big leagues" and at least one current Big XII schools will get left out in the cold.

I disagree as the Big XII will never let that happen.

I do agree that the SEC, B1X and Pac 12 will all eventually expand to 16 teams each, but they will likely pilfer from each other and/or the ACC and Big XII. Then, those 2 conferences will be left needing to expand to stay in the game. I hope this is 6 years down the road versus 2-3 years as we are playing catch-up. Regardless of the timing, I do believe we have the right pieces in place to now be a serious part of the discussion where that was far from the case 2-4 years ago.

Texas jumps and the Big 12 is dead and buried. The long term plans are for only four major conferences. Top 64 football schools will control everything. Would love to be a fly on the fall at Texas Tech right now,

The question will be which two teams will be left out, Texas Tech, TCU Kansas St or Iowa St. If Big 12 falls apart and the other 4 conferences go to 16 teams then two of these four are the ones on the outside looking in. Texas could make Texas Tech part of a package deal. but it is a given that two current Big 12 schools will be left out in the cold if it comes down to only four 16 team conferences.
