They have two bowls, THe Florida classi, The Orlando Lions for a year.

If they can attract one FSU or Florida game a year, a bucs preseason game, and maybe a big time friendly or two...the stadium will be justified.

That wouldn't even come close to justifying the cost of this.

Your a socialist...so why would you ***** about taxes. man up.

It's really not the taxes. It's the fact that it was a bad idea, we told them it was a bad idea (along with that $500 million performing arts center) and they did it anyway. I hope Ted Edwards lights Dyers @ss up. 07-coffee3

The Citrus Bowl situation has me fuming. $200MM and no tenant. Then they will spend anothe $120MM for the soccer team to play down the street. With a little forethought and $320MM a new stadium could have been built at the site of the old Amway Arena which is on the SunRail route.

The thing that surprises me about this was how long it took them to actually build a new arena for the Magic (yes I realize the old one wasn't very old), but I meant the Magic seemed to be trying to get a new arena for a decade. So to be able to spend this type of loot for 3-4 major events per year is surprising.

The UCF fans are saying that UCF is not actually located in the Orlando City limits. If that is the case, combined with UCF wanting an OCS, it would make no sense for the city of Orlando to invest in a UCF football facility. If UCF wanted to play in Orlando and share a stadium, which it sounds like they do not, then it would be a different story.

RE: Wish we still had the Russell Athletic Bowl
Ok, time for a backstory:

Back in 2005, the idiots that run the Citrus Sports council "informed" UCF with little warning or input that they'd be renovating the Citrus Bowl in 2007 (so they're only 7 years late!) and UCF would be out on our @ss for a place to play that year. The options apparently were some run down stadium in Daytona or elsewhere.

UCF, who had been exploring an OCS for a long whiel anyways, basically used this as the final straw justification to move ahead and build BHNS. They needed something that was afforadable, modular, and could be built fairly quickly. In other words, UCF gave a giant middle finger to the OCS folks and said "Bye".

The OCS folks were apparently shocked that UCF didn't simply roll over and do waht they say. And suddenly their awesome new stadium wouldn't have one single annual tenant.

Which is why I said at the bottom of the post - which you conveniently left out -

If UCF didn't want a DT Orlando stadium then super duper, but that doesn't mean that they need to build 1 20k seat multipurpose stadium for the soccer team, 1 40k seat multipurpose stadium for UCF, and put 200 mil in renovations at the Citrus Bowl all in 1 metro area, because at the end of the day the vast majority of all 3 of these projects are supported by taxpayers (since UCF is a public school).

That's a flat out waste of money. It just shows even more clearly how much Disney runs that city. Oh, ESPN wants the Cit Bowl nicer? Yes sir Mr. Mouse.

Yes, this is truly astonishing: UCF is not a part of Orlando, and UCF wants an OCS anyway, and yet UCF fans are complaining about Orlando not spending money on UCF football facilities but rather spending on Orlando football facilities! 01-wingedeagle

With a little forethought and $320MM a new stadium could have been built at the site of the old Amway Arena which is on the SunRail route. This would have solved 2 future parking problems. The upper bowl could have been covered for soccer games the same way it's done in the arena for hockey games.

The whole situation is lunacy, especially in today's economy. Now I know UCF doesn't want to deal with the authority that controls the Citrus Bowl, but (though I agree with your POV) the worst case would be for the city to invest in UCF's stadium and put in tons of revenue generation seating, upgrade to all chair backs, improve the concourse etc. That would give UCF a huge lead in the race to the P5 and having a major P5 school in the city would be more important than a nicer Citrus Bowl stadium to host two bowls a year.

We have seen what a waste the Miami baseball stadium has been. My only thought is that this could be a play to lure an NFL franchise, they are reaming if they think that will work.

Even if it meant a nicer stadium, the thought of the city/county weaving their evil tendrils into our stadium gives me the chills. There is also a law in FL that prohibits public funds from being used for strictly athletic college facilities. But admittedly, I'm not sure if that law applies to local public funds or just state tax dollars.
