Point is all but four or five schools most folks are flying to. I know we have a few that will drive to El Paso. Not me. Never doing that again and this is coming from a native Texan. Unless you are A UAB fan driving to every road game there is not a lot of difference in being in the west or east travel wise. I do think we need to be playing MTSU and Southern Miss every year one way or another.

I'm totally different ...

I would drive anywhere before getting on a plane...

The key to driving is giving yourself enough time to make the trip worth it. There are plenty of places in America That I haven't seen in every direction a football or basketball game could ever take us.

I actually like to drive...

We left on a Monday and I drove to DC then up to NYC then up to West Point. Left there right after our football game about 4pm Saturday and headed to Wichita, Kan. for a 12AM basketball game on Monday/Tuesday. Left there Tuesday afternoon and returned home early Wednesday morning....

48 hours later drove to Panama City Beach and 4 days after that over to San Marcos, Texas for Western's football game. We did miss the Marshall trip 3 days later (basketball game) ...it was calling for snow.

Build a bridge to Hawaii and if we made that bowl I would drive there...

other wise it will be my very first trip on a airplane

Are you afraid of flying? It's safer in an airplane than on the road. But, I'm with you even though I'm not afraid of flying I'd rather drive but my wife hates to drive. She says I only drive two hours and I start falling asleep and she has to do most of the driving. Ha, what a liar, hee, hee.

I don't think I'm afraid it's probably because when you have 2-3 people and take a lot of trips it's cheaper to drive. I actually enjoy driving...even in NYC/Manhattan after 30 minutes I felt right at home.

I'm also the type of person that loves history and can find interesting things to see or talk about in just about any place. My wife and I use to take off on a Thursday and start driving without any place really set in stone....drive two days then two days back. Instead of stopping at the chains we would stop at the mom & pops in really small towns to eat and talk...sometimes spending 2 or 3 hours just talking to the oldtimers about the way this world use to be.

I wish my wife would agree on doing this traveling without a plan thingy. She's an ex-teacher/counselor and is very organized. Everywhere we go it's because it's been planned already. I guess that comes from her days when she would chaperone her student trips to competitions. I once got jealous because I thought she was having a grand ol' time in her trips. She invited me to come one time and I regretted it. Those dumb kids had to be put in bed almost. We couldn't go to bed until around midnight. I never doubted her after that but I still went with her sometimes, of course I paid my own way. What a vacation, paying your way to babysit kids.

I like driving for the same reasons as well. Work doesn't make such long trips feasible for me during football season though. But I also love flying, so it doesn't matter to me either way.

Regarding a bridge to Hawaii though, one accident and you're screwed. If you think accidents cause long delays on land, well, you know where this is going. lol

The games we play against one another are meaningful. I hope the schools in the West that are struggling will keep improving. It will only make things more interesting. This could really be a lot of fun as the programs and rivalries grow. I see a lot of stability as we move forward. We need to take advantage of it.

Cross-divisional play does nothing to foster rivalries and it hurts at the gate. It should be kept to a minimum. Rivalries are all about playing meaningful games against schools in your immediate area every year. It's about increasing ticket sales as fans travel to road games in their cars. Attendance is everything in the G5. Money not being made through TV must be made up through regional rivalries.

Amen brother. I'm one who firmly believes that butts in the seats are far more important than the "potential" of TV markets. As I've said, if you can't get 'em to the stadium, what makes one believe they'll tune in on TV when there's so much competition.

I believe we'll all see going forward that it's going to be harder and harder to compete with the TV packages of the P5's.

Tighter georgraphical footprints make for more heated rivalries and not only generate more fan interest, but lower travel costs such that fans can justify making the road trip. And there are no better dollars earned than those of tourists.....they drive in, drop their dollars in the hotels and restaurants, buy tickets to the game, and then leave.
