What are the biggest faux pas?
We know GSU is out ( could be state, or southern ).
ASU is out ( could be Ark or App )
TSU is out ( Tstate thinks it's Tsouthern ).
Appalachian State University - App, Appy, ASU
Georgia State University - GaSt, Gstate
Georgia Southern University - GaSo, Gso
Troy University - Troy ( that was easy )
University of South Alabama - USA, SoBam
University of Louisiana Lafayette - LaLa, Ulaf, U-La-La
University of Louisiana Monroe - LaMon, Umon
Arkansas State University - stAte, ArkieState
Texas State University - Tstate, TxSt
New Mexico State University - NMSU, en-em-a-zoo,
University of Idaho - Idaho, U-da-ho
UL-L fans hate it when you bastardize their moniker or leave off letters and prefer you always use the official University labeling of "UL-L"
I can't believe the "Soal brothers" want to go there

Who wouldn't be insulted with LaLa, Ulaf, and U-La-La. If you can't use UL or Louisiana just call us the Cajuns.

Appy.
I don't mind Appy. In fact make it Happy Appy if you think it
would upset us..
Like our fight song goes:
"Always a winning, always a grinning, ...."
Cool stuff. Hi-hi-yikas, nobody like us ... indeed. I hear that's some sort of reference to hiking the mountains.
I don't know about about the lyrics but the tune is an old German folk song about hiking called Mountain Vagabond and, fun side note, the folk version is part of the set list of the house polka band at the Beirgarten at Disney World's EPCOT German Pavilion. We quite enjoyed singing HiHiYikas with giant beer and pretzel in hand. Our server told us we were her second group in a week to recognize it as App's fight song.

The actual title of the song in German is "Die Bergvagabunden." Also, other than calling us App or App State, Appalachian is acceptable as well...

Got it.
I will note that U-La-La is a play on the French:
Oh là là, which fits with the Cajun motif.
Tried a many of times and sounds stupid or lame. In either case, you will get very little in positive responses from Cajun fans on that play on French.

Ark State is fine.
There was a generation of Arkansans who despise Arkie. But their parents more than likely didn't care and now the hipster generation seems to dig it.
I don't use it but I don't care, though I generally presume anyone using it has in mind the Ozark hillbilly thing which is more appropriate to a school actually in the Ozarks like SOW (the School Out West)

Yikes!
Tstate OK?
Is it the descendant institution that LBJ attended? or is that another school?
Why waste the effort of typing six characters Tstate when four does the same TXST?

I've seen GaSots a lot lately... not really a huge fan of that.
That last one is an intentional insult and - only used by GAST fans - or maybe just one of them - You shouldn't be a fan of it because it is meant to insult us.
I agree - We will likely become simply known around the conference as we are in most of our state as simply "Southern".
Still - I don't surrender the "GSU" label. We are still the real GSU - but I refrain from using it now most anywhere most of the time - and especially this board because I really don't want anyone confusing the two of us as our Universities couldn't be much more different.
I'll never refer to GAST as GSU.

Its ok if YOU dont
On a serious note, when did Southern become an insult? I have lived here since 1982 and it was always Southern and now its an insult?

I'm sure both of your fans will read that right of the Helmet while wondering "What does it mean?" and "What is this strange game we are trying to play?"
