As the "Z" receiver on East Carolina's football team, Suffolk's Davon Grayson works with offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley, who while at Texas Tech tutored Z-men Michael Crabtree and Danny Amendola into the NFL.
"I've actually watched all of Crabtree's film from Texas Tech," Grayson, a sophomore, said during ECU's media day Tuesday. "It makes me feel as if I can do all the same things."
Grayson said he's faster and stronger from months of rehabilitation. And he even finds himself back atop the Pirates' depth chart - at a different position - as practice begins for ECU's first season in the American Athletic Conference.
Senior outside receiver Cam Worthy played so well in ECU's prolific offense filling Grayson's former "X" spot that Grayson has been moved to the Crabtree role in Riley's offense.
It is a role that the coach said demands greater versatility in an attack that returns senior quarterback Shane Carden and potential All-American slot receiver Justin Hardy.
"We felt like Davon had a little better skill set to be the guy to move, because we did not want to have him and Cam stacked up on one another," Riley said. "He's looked really natural at that spot. There are going to be some ways that we use him that we didn't last year and that he'll really excel at."
For Grayson, that would just be picking up where he left off.
