Almost Heaven Amber Ale from Mountain State Brewing.

If you're looking for something a little stronger than beer, check out Greenbrier County's Smooth Ambler.

There's a brewing company in Charleston with some good brews.

I would again second Armadillo Ale Works in Denton - Greenbelt farmhouse ale is legit.

However my favorite area breweries are Peticolas and Revolver.

How about a slight twist on the question at hand because I'm just curious.

What's the best selection at a bar in your team's town? And then how much would you pay for a pint of all these beers you're talking about at said establishment?

UAB is blessed with 5 local breweries within 2 miles of campus churning out bottles, cans, and kegs on a daily basis. Good People is the most widely distributed, but even then it's up to debate which brew is their best. You can buy Good People at UAB football games, so I'll go with Good People... Snake Handler is my favorite.

Good People Brewing
4 blocks north of Bartow Arena
-Pale Ale
-IPA
-Brown Ale
-Snake Handler (double IPA)
-Coffee Oatmeal Stout
-Bearded Lady (American Wheat Ale)
*large variety of seasonals & small batch brews

Avondale Brewing
2 miles east of campus
-Spring Street Saison
-Miss Fancy's Tripel
-Vanillaphant Porter
-Battlefield IPA
-Long Branch Scottish Ale
*large variety of seasonals & small batch brews

Cahaba Brewing
3/4mi east of campus
-Liquidambar
-American Blonde Ale
-Oku Uba IPA
-Ryezome Rye Stout
*variety of seasonals & small batch brews

Trim Tab Brewing
3/4mi east of campus
-Black IPA
-IPA
-Pillar to Post Rye Brown
*excellent small batch brews randomly released

Beer Engineers (taproom & restaurant coming by November, maybe)
4 blocks north of Bartow Arena
-Velocity IPA
-Bourbon Barrel Velocity IPA (aged 6 months in bourbon barrels)
-Peanut Butter Porter
-Cascadian Pale Ale

I hadn't heard of 2 of these breweries but I know what I'll be trying soon. I cosign the snake handler recommendation.

I'm not an IPA fan, but Snake Handler is good. I've tried beers from most of these at Bham Brew fest. I really like GP's oatmeal Stout and Brown Ale. Alabama in general is blessed with several good micro brewers . I like Back Forty (Gadsden), Straight to Ale (Huntsville) and Blue Pants (Huntsville). The Brew Pub in Montgomery is pretty good.

I think of every excuse I can to go to Birmingham just so I can hit up the Good People taproom. We get their most common offerings here, with an occasional keg or two of COS, but still haven't netted any Snake Handler. It also helps that you can get Cigar City Jai Alai in stores down there.

We already have our own.
I like their Southern Pecan. For Charlotte brews we have a lot of choices but I think Niner National nailed it with Olde Meck's Copper. This is my go to beer when I don't see anything else I want to try.

The Cigar City Maduro is good stuff.

In response to fussbudget, B'ham has a few places to try if you're willing to skim long beer menus...
The J. Clyde - seriously, check out their menu
World of Beer
On Tap Sports Cafe-Lakeview location
Hop City (more of a retailer, but they have a bar as well)
