Does anyone else find it odd that the original article leads with defending UH's chances this year by stating they had a 1 point loss the BYU instead of going with their close loss to a team that ended the season ranked #10th?

The people who write these collums should know better but the fact is they are like the typial casual fans who don't know UCF exists. BYU won a National Championship in 84', is well known for the QB's that played there (Steve Young, Ty Detmar), while UCF is an upstart program that has accomplished many great things in a very short life span.

Look at Ohio State's record and tell me why they are much higher in the top 25 than ECU, right now. It's about reputation and name recognition. Much the same as a politician named Clinton, Bush, Kennedy, Roosevelt might get leg up from name recognition, college football teams like BYU benefit from this. But, I do think BYU is the better team, this year.

UCF will get it's due recognition in time as long as they keep doing great things.

That's what I think, too. Heck, I don't even know if Memphis is a contender or pretender yet. Like you said, we'll know after a few more games.

FYI - This thread began before the season started. I dug it up because I called us pretenders before the first game. I really don't think there is a question anymore.

Yeah, I saw the post dates. I think you would know better than I would about Houston. I'm just not willing to go there this early, with Memphis or Houston, either way.

I would agree that early performances indicate Houston isn't so good, and Memphis probably is.

The UTSA debacle proved UH to be pretenders. We might be contenders for 2nd place in conference but that's most likely a stretch.

i thought about it and believe i would rank conference as follows (as of week4)

1. ECU (head and shoulders above the rest)

2. Cinci (not much data to go on given the early bye's but giving benefit of doubt based on last season)

3. UCF (Very well coached team )

4. Houston (great talent but QB struggling with poor coaching, unstable offense due to poor O-Line, and special teams that have looked like the Peanuts cartoon with bad holds (Lucy holding the football for Charlie Brown to kick and then Lucy pulls the football back.) If they can pull it together UH might stand a chance but that's a big if.

5. Memphis (looked good vs UCLA but lost, jury is still out)
6. Temple (looks to have improved

^ Well, it's a pretty safe bet the conference champ is in that group. Therefore, you can't really say for certain that Houston is a pretender. Almost, but not quite yet.

Pretenders. If we can't run the ball we aren't going to win the close games. Many people seem to forget the Temple, USF and Memphis games were close last year. I can see us losing all of those.

We are not a factor in the conference race. The OC is a disaster...again.

I understand your disappointment, UHDC... I wouldn't label us "Pretenders" to much talent on both sides of the ball... Bottom line our offense has not perform to its expectations, IMO.

I like how most people saying "Pretenders" are Houston fans.

Just goes to show you our faith in our OC.

It's too early to tell. But the up-coming game (10/2) with UCF will answer this question.
