Is it because it will help the people of Virginia. Odd since LU is private, but maybe that's how it works.

"In addition to the aborted job discussions with Puckett, Toscano said, any investigation should look at what he called questionable expenditures of the commission, including a $20 million grant for a new medical school at Liberty University, a private institution."
Last paragraph.
I don't see why Liberty being private matters. Vanderbilt and Wake Forest are private as well. Practicing medicine is a special calling in life. With a shortage of doctors looming, and the Affordable Healthcare Act effecting a doctor's ability to earn, who's going to set up in the inner cities or in rural Virginia. Students at Liberty are mission/service minded.
$20 million won't get a medical school off the ground anyway. The grant is a Virginia matter for Virginians (which Im not). As an aside, wasn't Liberty awash in cash as weve been repeatedly told?

Do not believe George Mason has a medical school. Can anyone confirm or deny that?
You made me curious so I looked it up. The court settlement was for 206 billion dollars. Philip Morris, R. J. Reynolds, Brown & Williamson and Lorillard were on the hook and many farmers were put out of business. Much of which was taken directly from the Virginia, North Carolina private sector economy.

The tobacco settlement was a "boom" for those farmers supposedly put out of business. They received a buyout for their tobacco acerage that was sold which was much higher than the market and then was able to plant as many acres in tobacco as they wanted (the planting restrictions were removed). And as a side benefit, prices went up for their tobacco sharply. Please do not feel bad for the farmers put out of business. Any leaving left with a bundle of cash and enjoyed thier visit to the bank.

What Google probably did not tell you is how the tobacco farmers were paid extremely well for their tobacco allotment. They were then allowed to plant all that they wanted to plant in tobacco. The money from the allotment was generally good enough to buy the farm itself. The farmer, being structured for tobacco in terms of equipment and knowing best how to plant it, expanded their operations and made out like bankers and dope pushers. Some very small farms quit planting tobacco but the tons of mid size farmers greatly expanded their operations and planted more than ever before. A couple of smart tobacco politicians figured this plan out. It has happened with some other government programs and crops such as rice but the money wasn't nearly as good to the farmer. The tobacco farmer is sitting at the top of the farmer food chain with one big pile of money in his bank account.

Not sure. But I know most Virginians like I are delighted to have one of the largest private universities in the country located in the state. The tobacco allotment is designated to help the Piedmont Virginia economy.
The first class begins in the spring.
The irony of getting money from a Tobacco Alotment to start a Medical School.
Self-fulfilling purpose I guess..
