Seems like a perfect scenario and much better than most schools.

Easier than UTSA and Texas State playing in the WACed? Naw...

That was one year and they are now in different conferences.
Besides if they are rivals its not as intense as this one.

Just making the point "losing" Armanti was not near the top of the list why GaSou collapsed and why App State was really good. The Armanti factor for both teams is way overblown.

It is highly improbable any two schools with the football tradition of App & Ga Southern could find more inept leadership than what our two schools enjoyed. App was fortunate to have several concerned alumni in highly influential positions force a change sooner than the folks in Statesboro. I honestly believe App's dramatic change in leadership and the resulting success, expansion in facilities and donations was the primary motivation behind the changes at Ga Southern. It's a classic case of keeping up with the Jones'. I think it's great what GSU is doing with their stadium & facilties. It keeps the pressure on App to constantly improve and work harder. Our schools may not exactly be on the other's Christmas Card list, but we sure are good for each other!

Can't comment on Appy's leadership --- however -- far as I'm concerned the AD and former prez at Southern had plenty of flaws, but pushing the program into the backwaters of FBS just to satisfy the vanity of a guestimated third of the fanbase wasn't one of them.

The jury's not only still out on whether or not Southern can afford its move to the lower levels of FBS, it hasn't even been convened yet.

We'll see in a year or two or three.

There's excitement over it now among a segment, but also skepticism. At some point some bills are going to come due.

Hopefully, Southern's traditionally stingy fan base will come through, otherwise a program that hasn't even been competitive at the top level of FCS in terms of budget and resources is going to find itself costing somebody a whole lot.

As for the onfield transition, we'll see. I'm figuring anywhere from 3-8 to 6-5.

The reality is Ga. Southern and App. St. belong so much more in the Sun Belt than they do in the Southern Conference. I am not going to trash the SoCon but the type of schools in the Sun Belt are schools like Ga. Southern and App. St. It took a while but we fit in the Sun Belt. We are now where both of our programs should be.

There was a kind of rivalry as we played in all other sports but we have played UTSA exactly once in football. We've played Idaho and NMSU more. So, no rivalry............yet.

Spend about 5 minutes on AGS, and they will try to have you thinking otherwise. I CAN'T WAIT for both GS and App to have success in the SBC and FBS...have those nay-sayers eating their own words.

A third? Outside of the faculty, it was more like only a third that was definatley against it or had a negative view, I will direct you to page 54 of the study GaSou had done I am sure you have read it. Every other group had a majortiy that was very postive or positive about the move. I dont know where you get your info.

Stingy? Do you even know what are alumni base is compared to the typical established FBS school? At best we have half the living alumni than even the smallest typical alumni bases in the country of similar size established FBS schools. The fact we have never operated at a deficit is a testament to our "stingy" alumni showing up to games and giving. The good news is the student population has grown more in the last ten to fifteen years than it ever has in the history of the school therefore the "stingy" alumni base will also be growing at it's fastest rate in the history of the school. Since the study was completed we have added 4K+/- more students alone.
Also, I assume you know the history of GaSou and know that the vast majority of our older alumni are still probably modest earning teachers that typically are not deep pocket folks and not really associated with being overly involved with athletics. More good news the diversity of degrees and amount of masters degrees is also is also improving yearly. We are not some school like Furman that will look the same way we did twenty years ago and in no way will look the same 20 years from now. Boise has done just fine operating at a fourth to a third of some of the big boy schools. There is virtually no area of the university that has not improved dramatically or not grown exponentially the last twenty+ years and really no area that will not continue to grow for the next twenty. I have no idea where some of this doom and gloom stuff comes from. From the sounds of it you would think some of our "fans" still see us as some local small teachers college and always will.

Scratching my head on this one......how does what you said negate what panama said?

How does a rivalry make a transition "easier"? "Better" - sure. I just don't see "easier".

I have to concur with the representative from Harrisburg. Davidson is the worst, and wear their Division III football team like a badge of honor.

I have. I actually had a father of a davidson player threaten to fight me after I was politely heckling their pitcher. lol. But my fiance used to live in spartanburg, so I guess a lot of my opinion also extends to people who lives in spartanburg. lol

Evidently happened a lot. An Elon players dad was wanting to fight someone and half falling down when his son playing for Elon was losing. Evidently his father thought his son should go to the NFL. Glad we never have to play them again.

Apparently you can't wear a backwards hat indoors within the city limits of Spartanburg.

I'd judge anyone from a town with ridiculous ordinances like that.

Sounds ridiculous but having been to Spartanburg many times and having relatives just across the border in NC can believe it.

It mainly stems from the thought that their little town is some sort of "Pleasantville". While it is nice, the cloud of smug that hangs over it makes it unbearable.
